OAKVILLE — Crescent got five touchdown passes from K.C. Spencer, 260 total yards from Noah Leonard and a stifling defense to come from behind and beat Oakville in a muddy, rain-soaked 8-man 1B Quad-District playoff opener on the road.

You read right, the Loggers had to come from behind after spotting the Acorns two touchdowns for a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter in Saturday’s game. They stormed back to score the final 36 points of the game to put Oakville away.

“We got punched in the mouth” to begin the game, said coach Brian Shimko.

“We called a couple of timeouts and regrouped,” Shimko said.

Spencer was only able to complete 11 out of 31 passes because of the wet conditions, but managed a solid 241 yards passing with 5 TDs. Leonard scored touchdowns of 51, 72 and 80 yards and ended up with 138 yards receiving. He also rushed for 122 yards on only three carries. Spencer had 92 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Shimko said the field was a total mess by the end of the game because of heavy rain.

“That place was just a mudhole,” he said. He said the team’s next game will likely be on FieldTurf at a neutral field.

However, Shimko said it was the defense that carried the day. Middle linebacker Fisher Hartley had 10 tackles, a sack, a caused fumble and a fumble recovery, while McCabe Story had three interceptions and Spencer two interceptions, including one that went for a 60-yard pick six to end the scoring in the fourth quarter. Shimko said Spencer has 25 or 26 interceptions now for his high school career.

Spencer also had a 19-yard TD pass to Caleb Anderson and a 16-yard touchdown throw to Robert Cox.

Cox scored another TD on a 20-yard run while Story had a 10-yard touchdown run.

The Loggers (5-4) next play Tacoma Baptist in the next round of the 1B Quad-Districts. The game will either be played Friday or Saturday at a venue to be determined.

Area teams Quilcene, Neah Bay and Crescent are all still alive in the 1B playoffs.

QUILCENE — Quilcene romped out to a 42-0 halftime lead against Mary Knight, then cruised in the second half for a 50-14 1B Quad-District playoff opener.

“It was a good game for us. We did a pretty good job. We have no turnovers at all until the end of the game,” said coach Trey Beathard.

Quilcene had more than 250 yards rushing and had a fumble recovery in the end zone from Acea Such for an early touchdown. Robert Comstock caused the fumble.

Six different Rangers scored touchdowns — Such, Comstock, Johnston, Ben Bruner, Olin Reynolds and Ace Elkins.

The victory pits the Rangers (7-2) in a second-round playoff game against Lummi, the No. 1-ranked 1B 8-man football team in the state. Beathard said a loss last week against Rainier Christian put the Rangers in the position where they have to play Lummi in the second round.

Quilcene played Lummi in the postseason last year, losing 40-0.

“They’re really good, they’ll be a challenge,” Beathard said.”We got a chance. It might be a small one, but it’s a chance.”

Quilcene will play at Lummi at 6 p.m. Friday.
