CROSS COUNTRY: Port Angeles, Sequim compete in rain-soaked Olympic League meet

BELFAIR — Four Roughrider runners placed in the top 14 as Port Angeles’ girls cross country team turned in a second-place performance in heavy rain at Olympic League Meet No. 1 on Wednesday at North Mason High School.

The Riders totaled 64 points on the 3.1-mile course, finishing behind first-place Bainbridge (20), but ahead of rival Sequim (third place with 95 points).

“PA Roughrider runners braved very wet conditions,” coach Angie Gooding said. “Despite the torrential downpour, athletes did well and there were many personal records.”

Port Angeles junior Leia Larson ended up third individually for the Riders with a time of 20 minutes, 38.86 seconds.

Bainbridge’s Sabine Hartenstine won the race in 19:50.12.

Sophomore teammate Miriam Cobb placed 11th for the Riders in 22:17.17, while Faerin Tait came in 13th in 22:45.21 and freshman Storey Schmidt was 14th in 22:50.84.

Dawn Hulstedt posted Sequim’s top finish as the senior was sixth in 21:14.76.

Wolves’ freshman Marea Denton placed 18th in 23:20.3, Birdie Pyeatt came in 23rd in 24:01.57, Manuela Valle Jover came in 29th (24:40.95) and Aspen Goldner ended up 37th (25:24.81).

In the boys race, Andre Campbell led Port Angeles athletes, placing 12th in 17:57. Easton Dempsey was next for the Riders in 18:22.50 to place 22nd, Justin Garrett was 28th (18:32.96) while Lukas Teague (19:28.73) and Justin McClarty (19:37.49) were 40th and 41st.

Sequim’s Adrian Osborne led the Wolves’ boys, coming in 19th in 18:21.63. Freshman Westley French clocked a time of 19:00.64 to end up 33rd, while Johnathan Tipton, Joshua Wakefield and Lewis Irven ended up 48th, 49th and 51st for Sequim.

Kingston senior Luke Whalen won the race in 16:40.26, Olympic won the team portion with 41 points. Port Angeles was sixth with 133 points and Sequim placed seventh with 178.

Sequim will host the next Olympic League meet on Wednesday at the Dungeness Recreation Area.

Volleyball East Jefferson 3, Vashon 0

VASHON — Penina Vailolo totaled nine kills, 16 digs and three blocks to pace the Rivals in a 27-25, 25-10, 25-17 Nisqually League road sweep of the Pirates.

Sophia Petta added five kills and four aces for East Jefferson, while teammate Carina Shiflett posted two kills and one block.

Gracee Liske led the team with 17 serves, two of them aces. Stephanie Duran Contereras added three aces.

The Rivals (4-3) visit Annie Wright on Wednesday.
