CROSS COUNTRY: Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt runs to West Central District crown

UNIVERSITY PLACE — Sequim cross-country runner Riley Pyeatt has added a district championship to go along with the Olympic League championship she picked up last week.

Pyeatt won the girls race at the Westside Classic District III 2A meet Saturday with a time of 18 minutes, 38.20 seconds, a personal record.

Port Angeles had three runners in the top 15 at the race held at Chambers Creek Central Meadow and finished a close second to White River, meaning the entire team gets to go to the Class 2A state meet next weekend in Pasco.

White River had 72 team points while Port Angeles had 83 (A lower score is better in cross-country scoring).

The Rider girls were led by Lauren Larson, who finished fourth with a time of 19:24.40, Kynzie DeLeon, who finished fifth with a time of 19:28 and Ella Holland, who finished 15th in 21:44.30.

The Port Angeles boys also get to go to state as a team after finishing second to Steilacoom.

The Roughrider boys had one top-10 runner, freshman Jack Gladfelter, who came in ninth at 17:10.00. Port Angeles’ Thomas Shaw finished 16th at 17:18.80 and Adam Borde was 17th at 17:18.90.

The Sequim girls barely missed being able to send their whole team to Pasco as the top five teams at district earn full-team state berths. The Wolves finished sixth with 151 points, just barely behind fifth-place Steilacoom, which had 146.

Port Angeles’ Ella Holland finishes 12th in the girls race at the West Central District III 2A Cross-country Championships held Saturday in University Place. The Port Angeles girls finished second at district and qualified as a team for the state meet next Saturday in Pasco.

However, Pyeatt won’t be alone as the top 35 individuals advanced from the district meet to state and Sequim placed three girls runners in the top 35. Jessica German finished 28th with a time of 22:21.90 and Anastasia Updike 30th in 22:37.50.

Also qualifying for state in the boys’ race was Sequim’s Eli Gish. He finished 34th with a time of 17:45. Port Angeles’ Naaman McGuffey, who gets to go to Pasco anyway as part of the Riders’ team, qualified individually as he finished 31st at 17:41.40.

The Sequim boys finished 13th as a team.

1A Race

Port Townsend’s Nathan Cantrell, the Olympic League 1A champion, finished second at the Westside Classic 1A race in a time of 16:22.30, 9 seconds off the top time run by Charles Wright’s Adam Briejar, the defending 1A state champion.

Cantrell’s teammate Kincaid Gould finished ninth with a time of 17:40.20. He also gets a trip to the state 1A meet, also held in Pasco, as the top 14 runners from district qualify.

For the girls, the entire Port Townsend cross-country team qualified for state, finishing second to powerhouse Klahowya.

Port Townsend’s Anika Avelino finished third with a time of 19:56.40. Her teammate Camryn Hines was 12th in a time of 22:10.90.

Chimacum qualified a girl for the state 1A meet as the Cowboys’ Rachel Matthes finished sixth with a time of 21:36.40. The top 14 runners move on to state.

Chimacum didn’t have enough runners to earn a team score.

Cantrell’s district time would have been the second-fastest at last year’s state meet.

Forks at SW District IV

WOODLAND — Forks’ Madelyn Archibald finished eighth in the Southwest District IV cross-country meet at Lewis River Golf Course with a time of 21:09.

Her teammate Karen Ensastegui finished 16th with a time of 22:50.
