DISTRICT CROSS-COUNTRY: Sequim’s Hulstedt finishes third

TACOMA —Sequim’s Dawn Hulstedt finished third at the District 3/4 Westside Classic Cross-Country meet, qualifying for the state 2A meet.

Hulstedt finished in a time of 20 minutes, 21.9 seconds, just 39 seconds off the district championship time of 19:42 set by Evelyn Shutske of Bainbridge.

The race was held at the Chambers Creek Center Meadow in Tacoma.

Leia Larson of Port Angeles also had a solid finish, coming in eighth with a time of 20:50.8. Also qualifying for state was Larson’s teammate Miriam Cobb, who finished 19th in a time of 22:23.5.

Other girls finishers included Marea Denton, Sequim 29th, 23:10.3; Faerin Tait, Port Angeles 37th, 23:49.2; Bridget Pyeatt, Sequim, 39th, 23:59.1; Manuela Valle Jover, Sequim, 42nd, 24:11.9; Storey Schmidt, PA, 45th, 24:30.4; Quinn Herr, PA, 64th, 26:18.1; Aspen Goldern Sequim, 27:38.5; Leka Moniz, PA, 79th, 28:41.8; Mirabel Palacios, PA, 88th, 34:09.7.

For the boys, Port Angeles’ Andre Campbell had the best local finish, coming in 22nd with a time of 17:49.5. He is the only local male runner to qualify for state.

Other finishers include Justin Garrett, PA, 33rd, 18:13.8; Easton Dempsey, PA, 37th, 18:261; Adrian Osborne, Sequim, 40th, 18:28.8; Westley French, Sequim, 52nd, 19:11.1; Leyton Larson, PA, 73rd, 20:04.5; Lukas Teague, PA, 78th, 20:26.9; Justin McLarty, PA, 85th, 21:05.4; Mason Mai, PA, 21:31.7.

The Port Angeles girls finished sixth in the district with 154 points and Sequim was seventh with 165 points. Cross country is like golf in that lower scores are better. Bainbridge won with 36 points.

East Jefferson

East Jefferson had an outstanding meet at the 1A level with six Rivals finishing in the top 16 for the boys and girls. The Rivals qualified three girls for state and the entire boys team for finishing third in the district.

The top East Jefferson finish was by Joshua Yearian in the boys race. He finished fourth in a time of 17:01.6. Right behind him in sixth place was Noah Isenberg in sixth in 17:17.7. Dustin Hines also qualified individually for state, coming in 16th with a time of 18:01.8.

Rainier Smith Williams was 21st in a time of 18:21.3, Nico Errichetti 23rd in 18:22.8, Zeke Banks 31st in 18:43.2 and Kepler Edmundson 45th in 20:01.8. They will all go to state.

The East Jefferson boys finished a close third in the district with 67 points. Vashon won district with 59 points while Annie Wright had 63 for second.

For the girls, Hilina Taylor-Lenz was ninth in a time of 22:29.1, and her teammate Leah Ferland was directly behind in 10th at 22:34. East Jefferson’s Michael Gregg was 13th in a time of 23:40.1. All three girls will go to state.

Meanwhile, Clara Camp was 20th in 24:56.4 and Kaida Rodrigues was 32nd in 28:26.9.
