DISTRICT TRACK & FIELD: Neah Bay, Clallam Bay, Crescent, Forks and East Jefferson athletes all qualify for state

TACOMA — Neah Bay, Clallam Bay and Crescent athletes all came away with Quad-District Track & Field Championships and advanced to the state meet on Thursday at Franklin Pierce High School.

Red Devils athletes earned two relay team championships and an individual shot put title, while the Bruins and Loggers earned individual event victories in what amounts to the Western Washington championship.

The top eight boys, girls and teams advanced to the state meet, which is Thursday-Saturday at Zaepfel Stadium at Eisenhower High School.

Neah Bay’s 4×100 relay team of sophomores Alexa Greene and Brianna McGimpsey and juniors Qwaapeys Greene and Angel Halttunen zoomed to a win in 52.45 seconds to help the Red Devils to a sixth-place finish in the 24-team event as a team with 40.5 points. Pope John Paul II was the team champion with 121 points. Crescent was seventh with 40 points and Clallam Bay 12th with 15.

Eighth-grader Amilia Corpuz joined Alexa Greene, McGimpsey and Halttunen for a win in the 4×200 (1:51.36).

Halttunen also set personal bests in qualifying for state with third-place finishes in the 100 (13.26) and 200 (26.87) sprints, and Alexa Greene ended up fifth in the 100. McGimpsey will compete in the long jump after coming in fourth to round out the Neah Bay state contingent.

Crescent’s Naomii Sprague was the individual star of the meet, winning a quad-district title in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.81, finishing second in the 100 hurdles (16.89), third in the long jump (15-1) and fourth in the triple jump (32-1 1/4).

Crescent junior Alexis Dunavant was fourth in the shot put, while Katelyn Dunavant was fifth in the javelin and eighth in the shot put for the Loggers.

Clallam Bay had three relay teams qualify: the fifth-place 4×400 team and the sixth-place 4×100 team of Simona Cruz-Lopez, Kyleigh Richardson, Brilei Hull and Kaleeka Mendoza-McCarty; the eighth-place 4×200 team with Autumn Tyree swapped for Mendoza-McCarty.

Mendoza-McCarty also made it to state in the triple jump (seventh) and high jump (eighth), and Cruz-Lopez will run the 400 meters (fifth).

In the boys’ meet, Neah Bay’s Daniel Cumming set a new best distance of 45 feet, 3 inches to win the shot put and also set a personal-record mark of 140-8 to end up second in the discus.

William Hull also was a quad-district champion for Clallam Bay as the junior set a new best time of 41.6 in the 300 hurdles.

Hull also made it to state in the triple jump (fourth) with a new best distance of 39-9 and the 200 meters (sixth).

Bruins teammate Cyrus Politte will run the 110 hurdles and compete in the triple jump after finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.

Clallam Bay was ninth as a team with 25 points, Neah Bay was 14th with 18 and Evergreen Lutheran won the team title (133).

Forks’ Foster wins title

CHEHALIS — Forks’ Noah Foster cruised to a Class 2B Southwest District IV championship in the 400-meter sprint, setting a personal-record time of 52.03 seconds in qualifying for next weekend’s state championship meet.

Foster also will compete in the 200 meters after placing third in Thursday’s district meet at W.F. West High School. The top four finishers in boys and girls events qualified for state, which is Thursday-Saturday at Zaepfel Stadium at Eisenhower High School.

He will be joined by junior classmate Gage Willenbrink, runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches and fourth place in the long jump with a 19-9 1/2 personal record.

In the girls’ meet, Forks’ 4×400 relay squad of seniors Moli Luong and Erika Williams, junior Skye Hestand and freshman Elizabeth Morrison will run at state after placing third in 4:28.47.

Williams was fourth in the 100 meters (13.46) and will also sprint at state.

Spartans senior Reagan Dunn set a new best throw of 104-8 to end up third in the javelin and advance to state.

Kareena Nandial also set a personal-record distance of 29-2 in the shot put, finishing fourth to make it to Yakima.

Moore leads Rivals

SILVERDALE — Led by 300-hurdles champion Arden Moore, East Jefferson’s sophomores came through with state-worthy performances at the third and final day of the Class 1A Nisqually West Central District meet at Klahowya Secondary School on Thursday.

The top two finishers in all events, plus those who qualify for the state standard, will compete starting Thursday at the state track and field meet at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.

Moore set a personal-record time of 46.65 in winning the 300 hurdles, edging Rivals’ classmate Kaydence Plotner, who ended up second with a new record time of 48.32.

Plotner also was second in the 100 hurdles with a new best time of 16.68.

The all-sophomore 4×200 relay team of Carina Shiflett, Moore, Abby O’Keefe and Clara Kamp advanced as runner-ups in 1:48.07.

Sophomore Kaida Rodrigues also was second in the triple jump (33-4 3/4).

No East Jefferson boys qualified as a top-two finisher for state.
