FIRECRACKER CLASSIC: Wilder Senior remains hot in 10-0 win

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Senior got an efficient performance from starting pitcher Kody Williams, who needed just 50 pitches to shut out Crush Orange in a 10-0 victory as part of the Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker tournament.

Wilder Senior is now 2-0 in the tournament and has yet to allow a run after no-hitting Colts White 21-0 Wednesday evening.

After a 2-8 start to the season, Wilder Senior has won six out of seven games, five of them by shutout, improving its record to 8-9. The seniors have allowed six runs, only two of them earned, in their past seven games.

Even during that 2-8 stretch, Wilder Senior was getting solid pitching. The seniors were simply having trouble scoring. In their past seven games, they have scored 61 runs.

Williams threw 38 strikes in his 50 pitches, allowing just two hits, walking none and striking out two.

“It’s a blessing that I got the opportunity for my first senior start,” Williams said. “[Catcher] Devyn Dearinger played a heck of a game,” Williams said.

He also gave credit to the defense behind him taking the pressure off him and allowing him to just throw strikes.

“We’re producing runs and that gives our defensive side more energy,” said coach Zac Moore. “We’re playing well right now. We’re doing more things to give us a chance to win. We’ve put in a lot of work.”

“As good as we have been batting, our pitching has been lockdown,” Moore said.

Williams thinks the seniors are still hitting their stride.

“I think we’re just starting,” he said. “We’re just touching as big as can go.”

Ezra Townsend and Alex Angevine had big nights. Townsend drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning, had an RBI single in the second, then hit a towering two-run triple to deep right-center in the fourth that came just a few feet short of being an over-the-fence home run despite hitting with a wooden bat. He finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs

Angevine, meanwhile had an RBI single in the second inning, walked twice, stole two bases, single-handedly pressured Crush Orange into making a couple of throwing errors with his speed on the basepaths and scored three runs. He also had a perfect game at shortstop, including a throw from deep in the hole to first to end the game.

Bryant Laboy was 1-for-2 with an RBI, two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.

Devyn Dearinger also made a good play to throw a runner out at third on an attempted sacrifice bunt.

The seniors play again today and likely two games Sunday with times still to be determined.
