FORKS — Forks trimmed Sequim’s lead to two early in the fourth quarter but couldn’t contain the Wolves down the stretch, falling 63-49 in a nonleague boys basketball contest Wednesday.
“Trey [Baysinger] hit a half-court 3-point shot at the third quarter buzzer to get us within four and we came out and scored a bucket to cut it to two.
“And we ended up giving 25 points in the fourth. They hit 11 free throws as we were fouling to stretch it out.”
Gooding said Sequim hit all 17 of their free throw attempts.
“You don’t see a team shoot like that from the line at any level,” Gooding said. “So no breaks there. When the game was in flux, a two-point game, we drove the basket hard, missed a tough contested layin and they went back the other way and got an and-1 and it was a five-point swing. Basketball is a game of runs and they made one.”
Erik Christiansen led the Wolves with 21 points.
“He scored pretty steadily across all four quarters,” Gooding said of Christiansen.
Hayden Eaton had 10 and Riley Chen eight for Sequim (2-1, 6-2).
“Sequim is a well-coached team. They did a lot of different things and showed a number of different looks — a full-court trap, they played man well, a zone that turned us into jump shooters.”
The Wolves host Washougal at 3:15 p.m. Dec. 27.
Baysinger led Forks with 16 points and Tony Flores added 14.
The Spartans (4-1) will play Toledo on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey.

FORKS — The Spartans gave a game away that they probably shouldn’t have in a nonleague loss to the Eagles.
“We had a couple of rough days at practice, the energy wasn’t there, and it showed up in the game,” Forks coach David Hurn said.
“That’s on me as a coach. I got outcoached today, outcoached yesterday and the day before. I have to do a better job of getting them prepared to play. That’s on me.”
Hurn said Klahowya point guard Ella Koebelin was a difference maker.
“She hurt us,” Hurn said. “She hit seven 3s tonight and had 22 points.
Credit to Klahowya they played a good game. They wanted it more than us, we didn’t come out to play.”
Rian Peters had 13 points and Chloe Leverington hit for 11 on a slow night at the office for the Forks offense.
Hurn said the Spartans (3-2) will face some difficult teams this weekend.
“We are going to play a really tough [Class] 2B school in Rainier [tonight] and then stay the night and play 3A Shelton on the way home Saturday.”
