FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Port Townsend tops rival Chimacum on desperation halfback pass on game’s final play (With video of the game-winning TD)

PORT TOWNSEND — It’s not wrestling season just yet for Port Townsend senior Dylan Tracer.

Tracer, a state-placing grappler during the winter for the Redhawks, avoided Chimacum’s takedown attempt on the final play of Friday night’s Quimper Quarrel and unleashed a prayer of a pass into the end zone that was partially tipped — and hauled in by wide-open sophomore Josh Davis — for the game-winning score in Port Townsend’s 24-22 rivalry win over the Cowboys.

With the Redhawks in a mad scramble just to get the snap off before the final buzzer sounded, Tracer took a toss to the right sideline from quarterback Noa Montoya, was bottled up by Chimacum’s Logan Hicks and looked to be stopped for a game-ending loss, but somehow managed to get the pass off to an all-alone Davis in the short, right corner of the end zone — setting off a celebration by the Redhawks that may not be topped for some time.

Full details on the game, plus photos and quotes from players and coaches will appear in Sunday’s Peninsula Daily News.

Sequim 36, Bremerton 21

SEQUIM — The Wolves went to the ground to get past the Knights and charge into the postseason as the Olympic League’s No. 2 seed.

Sequim racked up 241 rushing yards as quarterback Taig Wiker rolled up 133 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 21 carries.

Running back Walker Ward also had a great night on the ground, totaling 122 yards on 24 carries.

Garrett Hoesel had a monster game at wide receiver with 149 yards and four grabs, including a 42-yard touchdown reception.

North Kitsap beat Olympic 28-14 to take the league’s top spot to the district playoffs.

Sequim (5-1, 8-1) will face the South Puget Sound League’s fourth seed — River Ridge (4-5) next weekend in a winner-to-state, loser-out district playoff contest.

No. 5 Neah Bay 54, Lummi 42

BELLINGHAM — The Red Devils dug themselves an early hole but took the lead into the locker room at halftime and didn’t look back to beat the rival Blackhawks and earn the Northwest Football League’s No. 2 seed to the Class 1B Quad-District playoffs and the first-round bye that goes with it.

Neah Bay (7-1) will serve as hosts for a Nov. 15/16 matchup with the winner of a first-round game between the District 2 No. 3 and Lummi, the District 1/3/4 No. 3.

Port Angeles 25, North Mason 20

BELFAIR — The Roughriders (1-6, 1-8) capped their season in style, picking up the team’s first win of the season in the final game of the year.

Derek Bowechop had two interceptions, including one he returned for a 75-yard touchdown to lift Port Angeles.

Hoquiam 48, Forks 13

HOQUIAM — The Spartans wrapped their season with a road loss to the Grizzlies. All but one player should return for Forks, which finished 4-5 overall under first-year head coach Trevor Highfield.
