PA boys, girls’ games both come down to final shot

Sequim Wolves

KINGSTON —The Sequim girls basketball team got big games from Gracie Chartraw, Libby Turella, Bobbi Mixon and Hailey Wagner in routing Kingston 70-34 in the Wolves Olympic League opener Friday night.

All four girls had solid games. Chartraw hit three 3-pointers and led the Wolves with 20 points. Turella hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 to go along with six assists.

Wagner had 12 rebounds and pulled down 19 rebounds, eight of them offensive boards. Mixon had 11 points to go with seven assists and six steals. Taylor Heyting added six points and nine rebounds.

“[Chartraw] was very efficient tonight made some really good passes and worked hard to get good looks,” said coach Joclin Julmist. “Hailey … was very aggressive on both sides of the court.

“Bobbie … can be really good if she decides to commit to working hard every practice,” Julmist said.

After Sequim got up big 20-7 after the first quarter, Kingston fought back to make it 28-17 Sequim at the half. The Wolves blew the game open with a 22-5 third and never looked back.

Sequim (1-0, 1-1) next hosts North Mason (1-0) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles freshman Sariah Doherty made a pair of clutch free throws with 33 seconds left in the game, but North Mason responded with a bucket on an inbounds play with 20 seconds left to pull out a 30-29 win over the Roughriders on Friday night.

After North Mason’s basket, Port Angeles’ Teanna Clark had a chance at a game-winning 3-pointer with five seconds left, but the ball rattled in and out and the Bulldogs hung on for the win.

The Riders had fought back from a big deficit as North Mason got up 17-4 in the first quarter. The Riders clamped down hard on defense, holding the Bulldogs to just two points in the second and third quarters, though they had trouble scoring a lot of points themselves, cutting the North Mason lead to 19-16 entering the fourth quarter.

“We slowly fought back from the 12-point first-quarter deficit and took a 24-23 lead in the fourth quarter on a Sariah Doherty 3-pointer,” said coach Michael Poindexter. “Later, Lexie Smith hit a 3-point shot to give us a 27-26 lead.

The Riders had 21 offensive rebounds to North Mason’s 13 and forced 30 Bulldogs’ turnovers, but Port Angeles shot just 21 percent for the game.

“Led by Lexie Smith, our rebounding effort was solid. Becca Manson and Teanna Clark led us on defense. We just could not get up enough high-percentage shots to be successful,” Poindexter said.

Lindsay Smith led the team with nine points and seven rebounds, while Doherty had eight points and seven rebounds, and Lexie Smith seven points and 11 rebounds. Manson had eight rebounds and four steals. Clark led the team with five steals.

Port Angeles (1-1) played Neah Bay on Saturday night.

PORT ANGELES — Battling back from a disastrous third quarter, the Port Angeles boys basketball team had a chance for a game-tying 3-pointer in the final second, the shot just wouldn’t go down in a 73-70 Olympic League opener against North Mason on Friday night.

The Roughriders went into the halftime break up 37-27, but the Bulldogs roared back with a 27-11 third quarter.

“We started off OK. We had good rythym in the second quarter. In the second half we came out really flat. There was no sense of urgency. They took control after making back-to-back 3-pointers,” said Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin.

“I loved our fight. We had 48 pointers in the paint,” Ulin said. The Bulldogs countered with their outside shooting, making five straight threes at one point and finishing the game 11-for-22 from beyond the arc.

“Give North Mason credit, they made some tough shots,” Ulin said.

After that rough third quarter, the Riders outscored the Bulldogs 22-19 in the fourth and nearly made a miraculous comeback in the final half-minute.

The Riders were down 73-65 when Gus Halberg, who led the Riders with 20 points, scored a basket. He missed a free throw, but the Riders got the ball back and got it to Keatyn Hoch, who drilled a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left to make it 73-70.

North Mason tried to break a press with a long pass, but Halberg stole the ball to give Port Angeles a final chance. He took a 3-pointer with five seconds left that was straight, but it went off the front rim and then the back rim and refused to drop.

“Any time you score 70 in high school basketball you should win. We’re going to be a work in progress,” Ulin said.

Hoch scored 15 points and Brock Hope scored 14.

Port Angeles (0-1) played Highline on Saturday night.

Crescent 51, Darrington 40

DARRINGTON — In the Battle of Loggers, the Crescent boys basketball team pulled away from Darrington with a 21-point fourth quarter for a 51-40 win.

Crescent went into the fourth locked in a tight 30-28 game but took control over the final eight minutes.

“It was a typical Loggers vs Loggers matchup, our games with them always seem to be physical and a little chippy and this was no exception,” said Crescent coach Chris Ferrier. “We had bodies hitting the floor all night, and my guys kept bouncing up and battling. We had a few too many turnovers and some other unforced errors, but we like having things to work on in practice.”

As a testament to the physical play, Crescent shot 30 free throws, making 12.

“We were able to get enough stops on defense especially in the fourth quarter to seal the deal,” Ferrier said.

Mikah Love led Crescent with 14 points, while Josh Noel had 13 and Levi Bourm nine.

Crescent (2-1) played Concrete on Saturday night.
