PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles zoned Kingston defensively and shot past the Buccaneers 59-33 in an Olympic League girls basketball contest Tuesday while getting a combined 55 percent shooting night from the floor from the team’s starting five.
“Our zone defense forced 30 Kingston turnovers and caused long possessions for Kingston on offense,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said. “Our starting group shot 55 percent from the field in one of our most disciplined offensive games of the season.”
Poindexter said the Roughriders’ scoring was balanced — Port Angeles hit from inside, outside and scored off turnovers “especially well in transition.”
“All five of our starters (Izzy Felton, Paige Mason, Lexie Smith, Teanna Clark, Lindsay Smith) had solid games, each with a variety of contributions.”
Lindsay Smith led the team in scoring and steals with 20 and seven, respectively. She also had five rebounds.
Elder sister Lexie Smith scored nine and led the Riders with 12 rebounds, while dishing four assists and grabbing three steals.
Mason added 12 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals for Port Angeles, and Felton scored eight with a team-high six assists, four steals and four rebounds.
Port Angeles and Sequim are tied for first place in the Olympic League at 5-1, along with 3A Bainbridge.
Port Angeles (7-6 overall) next plays Sequim (7-2 overall) for the top spot in the league among the 2A schools at 7 p.m. today.

BREMERTON — Gracie Chartraw sank six 3-pointers and scored 26 points to lead Sequim to a 64-34 victory over the Trojans on Tuesday.
“She was aggressive and took what the defense was giving her,” Sequim coach Joclin Julmist said. “She also had five rebounds and two steals. She did a great job on defense, helping her teammates and communicating.”
The Wolves forced 14 steals in the win, led by three steals from Libby Turella and Jolene Vaara.
“The girls worked really hard on defense tonight and shot the ball a bit better. Everyone got to play which is always fun,” Julmist said.
“Jolene had another solid game with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. She did a great job on defense tonight. She was all over the place getting her hands on a lot of balls.”
Dani Herman knocked down all five shots she took, four from the floor, to score nine points with four rebounds.
Julmist praised her defense alongside Vaara. The Turella sisters also impressed.
”Libby had another good game. She has been the glue for us this year,” Julmist said. “She does all the dirty work, rebounds, plays the lane getting deflections — she had seven points and 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals [and really] filled up the stat line tonight.”
Julmist said Claire Turella came off the bench and made an impact defending one of Olympic’s top players.
“She got her hands on a lot of balls, getting deflections and rebounding,” Julmist said. “She ran the court very well. She was a good spark off the bench. She does a lot of good things it seems that she’s getting better every day. She’s like a sponge and wants to get better, I love her competitiveness.”

VASHON — The Rivals got going after halftime, extending a seven-point lead to 24 after a dominant third quarter to earn a Nisqually League road win.
“Despite a 14-7 lead at halftime, I was very disappointed with the performance,” coach Lorraine Rimson said. “I challenged the girls to play with more intensity and at a higher level. They proceeded to score 22 and hold Vashon to five [in the third].”
Penny Vailolo led all scorers with 19 points, while Kay Botkin had eight and Teri Wiley six for the Rivals.
“The team as a group came together in a really strong way,” Rimson said. “It is not lost on me that not so long ago we would have been thrilled to be up by seven at halftime regardless of the circumstances.
“We have come a long way, but the girls are clear that they have bigger goals that they want to achieve. We as coaches are here to guide them in the best way we know to reach the goals that they, as a team, have set.”
Third-place East Jefferson (5-2, 5-6) visits second-place Annie Wright (5-1, 6-4) on Friday.
