BAINBRIDGE — Port Angeles’ defense did its job in zone and man formats and Millie Long posted 27 points, eight steals and five assists to lift the Riders on the road.
“Our 1-3-1 [zone] and later a switching man-to-man defense were the key factors in our win,” coach Michael Poindexter said. Both Millie Long and Bailee Larson did an exceptional job in our 1-3-1 defense.”
Port Angeles forced 28 turnovers and committed just eight.
Eve Burke added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Riders while Jaida Wood led the team in assists with six along with seven points, four steals and four rebounds.
Larson had five steals, five assists and two points.
Poindexter said Port Angeles played well against Bainbridge sharpshooter Anna Kozlosky.
“She was 5 of 10 from behind the 3-point arc, often hitting contested 3s,” Poindexter said. “It may sound odd to say when she had 19 points, but I thought our team did an overall good job of defending her. The Spartans were able to get to the free-throw line, hitting 10-14, helping them stay in the game for much of the time. We will be working in practice on better discipline in our defensive approach to shot attempts.”
Port Angeles (6-0) hosted North Kitsap on Saturday night after press deadline.

FORKS — The Spartans didn’t play to their potential the first time around against South Bend. But Friday’s game was different.
“We played them in the second game of the season down there and we played like we had two practices and only beat them by seven points or so,’ coach David Hurn said. “I talked pregame about redeeming ourselves for how we played the first time around. We wanted them to show who they are and play up to our potential and play with high energy and I guess they did that.”
Forks led 25-0 after the first quarter and 36-2 at halftime.
Keira Johnson led the Spartans with 17 and Chloe Leverington added 13.
Forks (6-1) faces a crucial week ahead in its bid for a Pacific League title. The Spartans visit Ilwaco (4-2) on Monday and face Raymond (5-1) on the road Wednesday.
“We are facing the top two teams in our league and we’ve had this week circled for a while,” Hurn said.

FORKS — The Spartans sank seven first-half 3-pointers to shoot past the Hyaks.
“We brought good solid energy on defense and our pressure created turnovers and fast breaks and we shot well from outside,” coach David Hurn said.
Keira Johnson continued her strong freshman debut, scoring a team-high 21 points. Chloe Leverington added 12 and Casadie Wharton added 10.
Hurn pointed out the play of Kray Horton and Kyra Neel.
“Kray and Kyra … we rely on them to play good solid defense for us and their hard work helped us out in the zone and scoring the ball,” Hurn said.

PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson rebounded with a much stronger showing against the Vikings on Thursday.
“The girls played really well,” coach Lorraine Rimson said. “After a shell-shocked showing against PA, we bounced back well even without Katie Clark.
“Jada had a double double. She was terrific.”
Jadeah Nordberg scored 11 and hauled down 16 rebounds, Soso Johnston added nine points and five rebounds and Gina Brown scored six with 13 boards.
Former Chimacum player Mia McNair had 20 points against her former teammates and former rivals.
“We neutralized their No. 20 [McNair] and that was a priority,” Rimson said.
