GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Chimacum, Port Angeles and Sequim all win big

SILVERDALE — Chimacum broke out in a big way to pick up its first win of the season, thumping Klahowya 64-29 in the Olympic League 1A Division opener for each team.

Mia McNair poured in 34 points to lead the Cowboys, connecting on four 3-point baskets and scoring 14 points as Chimacum opened with a 17-7 lead after one quarter.

A bloody nose kept McNair on the bench for the second quarter, and the Eagles clawed back into the contest as Chimacum led 26-22 at the break.

“Second half we came out and applied a little more pressure, we went into our half court trapping defense,” Cowboys coach Trevor Huntingford said.

“We picked up a lot of points in transition. A team effort, we got a lot of stuff off of traps, steals and run-outs.”

Chimacum shut out Klahowya 14-0 in the third and allowed one point through the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter to turn the close game into a blowout.

“We gave up about a point in the second half,” Huntingford said. “We did a way better job defensively and shared the ball tremendously in transition.”

Jada Trafton added 12 points, all but two coming in transition, according to Huntingford.

Trafton had eight steals.

“This was the first game where we’ve had our whole team together and able to play.”

Diamond Young made her first appearance of the season and had five points and rebounded well, Huntingford said.

“The thing about this game is a lot of kids might not show up in the stats but they played really well for us,” Huntingford said.

“Grace Yaley did a good job on the boards, handling the ball and getting out in transition.”

Yaley scored six points, had six rebounds and four steals.

“Katie Clark, Savannah [Huntingford, they did good jobs. Clara Noble had a good night defensively.

KINGSTON — The Roughriders shot well from the floor and kept the Buccaneers quiet offensively in Port Angeles’ Olympic League 2A Division opener.

All twelve of our players contributed to our best overall defensive effort of the season so far.”

The Riders shot 47 percent from the field, achieving a pre-game goal of having a balanced offensive attack, according to Poindexter.

“Millie Long and Madi Cooke combined for a 60 percent shooting effort, scoring 28 points between them with just 12 minutes of play each,” Poindexter said.

Our intensity and defense through all four quarters was solid, though, and won us this game.”
