PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks used a strong third quarter to win their rematch with the Rangers.

Class 1B Quilcene defeated 1A Port Townsend 50-46 on Dec. 8.

“The third quarter became [our] undoing in this one,” Rangers coach Briana Weller said following Monday’s loss.

“Ultimately, our poor rebounding effort lost us this one. The Redhawks at times were getting five and six opportunities to score because we didn’t get after the defensive rebounds. Offensively, we need to start following our shots and fight for the ball.

“I know we are young, but [we] have to get in the mindset to rebound as a team and not rely on just one or two teammates to do this critical job.”

Redhawks sophomore Kaitlyn Meek nearly notched a triple-double, finishing with 21 points, nine rebounds and eight steals.

She was particularly dangerous in the important third quarter, when Port Townsend’s full-court pressure led to steals and fast breaks. The Redhawks outscored Quilcene 17-9 in the third, extending a three-point lead to 11 points.

Port Townsend (2-5) won its second straight game and broke 50 points for the first time this season.

“[Our] post play emerged as a force in this game,” Redhawks coach Scott B. Wilson said.

“[Jenna] Carson, a junior, worked hard inside for 12 points, and senior Reilly Berkshire was always getting after rebounds and putbacks. She finished with five [points], four in the first period.

“Senior Kassie Olin was tireless on both ends of the court and helps everyone play better.”

Quilcene senior Megan Weller surpassed the 1,000-point barrier for her career with a pair of buckets early in the first quarter. She finished with 16 points Monday.

Allison Jones paced the Rangers with 20 points.

“The Rangers are an excellent team with two bona fide basketball stars in Megan Weller and Allison Jones and a strong supporting team. They could challenge any 1A team,” Wilson said.

“Our goal in this game was to limit Weller and Jones. That assignment went to Kaitlyn Meek and Jenna Carson, with the rest of the team helping at literally every turn.

“Weller and Jones still got their points — they scored 36 between them — but the defense overall held the Rangers to nine fewer points than our first matchup.”

Quilcene (2-4) hosts Clallam Bay (8-1) next Tuesday. The Bruins beat the Rangers 47-44 in the season opener.

The Redhawks next play in the Crush in the Slush. The annual tournament will feature 14 teams Monday and Tuesday at Port Townsend High School.

Port Townsend plays the Aussie Travelers on Monday and Bainbridge’s JV team on Tuesday.
