GIRLS SOCCER: Sequim falls in penalty kick shootout heartbreaker

Riders win on the road in a shutout

SEQUIM — Sequim girls soccer’s district playoff hopes took a turn for the worse at home against Kingston on Tuesday as the Wolves suffered their fourth one-goal defeat of the season in a 3-2 penalty kick loss.

In regulation time, Sasha Yada scored a goal for Sequim assisted by Olive Bridge and Bella Rich scored while assisted by Raimey Brewer.

Brewer, Yada and Kiley Winter all connected on their penalty kick attempts, but the Wolves missed on their third attempt to give third-place Kingston (6-2) the upper hand.

Sequim goalkeeper Kalli Grove made 12 saves in net.

The fifth-place Wolves (3-5) host North Mason (0-8, 1-8) at 7 p.m. today.

BELFAIR — The Roughriders experimented, mixing and matching lineups and getting everybody plenty of playing time in a shutout win over the Bulldogs.

“We knew it was a game we could get everybody playing time and we are also struggling with some injury, so we know there a time down the road players are going to have to play out of position, so we tried out some things now rather than be caught off guard later,” coach Daniel Horton said.

“The girls responded to that and understood what we are trying to do long term and were able to play together despite me moving things around and subbing heavier than usual. They saw the benefits.”

Sophomore Morgan Politika broke through in the sixth minute to put Port Angeles up 1-0.

“Lilly Anne Lancaster played a ball through the box, “Pyper Morgan got the start, met the ball at the back post and nice and easy she put it in the back of the net,” Horton said. “She’s improved a ton and it was good to see her get a goal.”

A Stella Fradkin goal, assisted by Audrey Rudd followed in the 36th minute, and two minutes later Fradkin assisted on a Mariah Traband goal for a 3-0 halftime lead.

“We were subbing 2-3 players every 5-10 minutes, so it was nice to see them play through some chaos coming from the coaching staff,” Horton said.

Teanna Clark added the final goal in the 66th minute.

“Out about 25 yards out on the left side we earned a free kick and it was right within Teanna’s bubble, we know she can shoot it or play it into the mix and give us a chance to score. She was hungry for a goal and it was a great shot to the upper left-hand corner. A great goal and a great capper to the game.

North Mason managed just one first half shot as the Riders earned the shutout.

Port Angeles (5-3) hosts first-place Bainbridge (8-0, 9-1) at 7 p.m. today at Wally Sigmar Field.

Cascade Christian 6, East Jefferson 0

PUYALLUP — The short-handed Rivals had a long day against the Cougars.

“RJ Spainhower had broken her finger in the Saturday game, so Akili Clevenger is back filling in at goalkeeper,” coach Rob Cantley said. “She did great but we just allowed too many chances and were 4-0 down at the half.

“Second half was better but couldn’t get much going forward. Teri [Wiley] did her best at the back but we also lost Heike Quinn our other center back to concussion 20 minutes in, so we’re just losing players left and right.

East Jefferson (1-7-1) hosts Seattle Christian (1-3-0, 2-8-1) at 5:30 p.m. today at Memorial Field.
