SEQUIM — Sequim put together a full 80 minutes of positive play in a 4-0 senior night shut out of Kingston in Olympic League girls soccer play at Sequim on Thursday.
“It turned out really well for us, the girls put two full halves together and played a nice complete game,” coach Ken Garling said. “We wanted to give our three seniors Aliyah Weber, Jenna Mason and Alexandra Salas, a good send off in their last home match.”
Some solid strategy led to Sequim’s first goal.
“We scored early in the eighth minute when a great cross came in from our right side from outside back Teagen Moore,” Garling said. “She floated out right side and sent it into the middle and Taryn Johnson was in the center at about the top of the 18-yard box and she faked like she was going to kick it and Raimey Brewer was behind her right on the end of it and just buried it. A great attack that started at midfield.”
The Wolves had the run of play through the rest of the first half, possessing and building up the attack and putting about 10 more shots on goal.
But it took until the 57th minute to add some insurance.
“Raimey had a nice cross into the center and Jenny Gomez was there in the middle had a great finish. A nice series between those two, “Garling said.
Sequim scored again quickly off a corner kick one minute later.
“The ball rebounded and bounced around and Taryn anticipated it and was right there to knock it in,” Garling said.
And Kaia Lestage capped the game with a late goal on what Garling called “a fantastic solo effort.”
“Kaia is a standout defender for us and she asked if she could go and play up top,” Garling said. “We gave Taryn a break minutes-wise and Kaia answered the call and was dangerous the last 15 minutes. She works so hard, so we were so happy she was rewarded with a goal.”
Garling also had praise for a couple of players who stood out defensively.
“Ivy Barrett played really well defensively for us and Hailey Wagner, another freshman, has done a great job defending and is a danger all around on free kicks.”
Sequim (7-6-0) wrapped the regular season against Olympic late Friday.
The Wolves are the third seed out of the Olympic League into the Class 2A Bi-District Tournament and will likely hit the road to begin the postseason on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Port Angeles 4, Bremerton 2
PORT ANGELES — Four Roughriders scored as Port Angeles rallied from two first-half deficits for a senior night win over the Knights.
“We didn’t start out great, we came out really flat,” coach Daniel Horton said. Bremerton pressures you a lot and they are really good at long balls, balls sent over the top or free kicks into the box and those can be scary situations.”
The Knights struck first in the fifth minute, before Piper Williams equalized around the 20-minute mark.
“She was assisted by Anna Petty off a corner kick. Piper crashed late and got the ball on the inside of her foot to the back of the net. We scored off of corner kicks quite a bit early in the season, so it was good to see us go back and get a goal off a corner kick if we need to.”
Bremerton sent in a long free kick seven minutes later to go up on top once again, but the Riders had answers.
Kedryn DeScala scored off an assist by Izzy Felton in the 33rd minute to knot things up at 2-all at half.
Felton put Port Angeles ahead on an assist by Piper Williams in the 55th minute and Teana Clark added an insurance goal in the 75th minute.
Horton said the team’s defense improved after halftime with junior Maeve Croteau leading the way.
“She had a monster game in the second half,” Horton said. “Limited their ability to play outside, ran balls down.”
Seniors Anna Petty, Saylah Commerton, Piper Williams, Julia Baeder, Lilly Sanders and Samara Holshouser were honored at the game.
“A great group, from their vocal leadership to leading by example,” Horton said. “All of them have been willing to step out of their comfort zone. It’s hard to have a great coach in coach Scott Moseley, not easy to get a new coach and play a new formation, take on a different roles or move positions and they haven’t batted an eye. They’ve all stepped up and asked how they can help us succeed.”
