GOLF: Are you good enough to go for the Peninsula Cup?

A LUCKY AND skilled team will come away with the 10th annual Peninsula Cup, when the yearly edition of the tournament pits the best players from the seven North Olympic Peninsula golf courses in an 18-hole medal play match at Port Ludlow Golf Course on Sunday, June 10.

Twelve-player teams from Clallam and Jefferson county courses will tee it up with the 10 best scores (two gross, eight net) determining a team score and ultimately, a champion.

The event has a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Entry fees are $50 without cart, $60 with cart and include green fees, range balls and lunch following the round.

Peninsula Golf Club members ran away with the title last year on their home course.

Peninsula’s Mark Mitrovich shot a 6-under-par gross score of 66 to lead all players, while Gary Thorne added a gross 74 for the winners.

Cedars General Manager and Director of Golf Bill Shea shot a 5-under-par 67 to lead his team.

Congrats to the Wolves

The Sequim High School boys and girls golf teams cruised to unbeaten records in regular season Olympic League match play, with each team posting records of 9-0.

Shea, who coaches the boys squad, pointed out that Sequim has posted a 28-0 record in Olympic League play and won three straight league titles.

Garrett Smithson is back coaching the Wolves’ girls team and Sequim is back atop the Olympic League standings after a second-place finish last spring.

The Wolves have shown plenty of improvement this season with Samantha Smith and Maddie Uranga shedding strokes and setting personal-best rounds thus far. Sequim is led by Shea’s daughter Sarah, who will play for the Western Washington University women’s golf team next fall, joining big brother Jack, who plays for the Vikings’ men’s team.

Sequim hosted the Olympic League 1A/2A Championships at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course late Tuesday.

Thanks to all the North Olympic Peninsula courses and their members who support youth and prep golf.
