DITCHING LAWSUITS FOR lob wedges for at least one day, members of the Jefferson County Bar Association will host their second annual benefit golf tournament at Port Townsend Golf Club on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The “It’s for the Kids” tournament will raise funds for student scholarships.
Traditionally, the bar has used member dues to fund a $1,000 scholarship to one graduating senior from Port Townsend, Chimacum and Quilcene high schools.
“After reviewing so many scholarship applications from so many deserving and stellar students, the bar decided to host a fundraising event in order to do more and to give more,” said attorney and bar association vice president Cheryl Potebnya.
“Last year’s event was so successful, allowing us to double our scholarship amounts, that we decided to do it again.”
Members of the public are invited to play in the four-person scramble event which begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
Fees are $30 per player, plus a $10 green fee for nonmembers of Port Townsend Golf Club.
The Jefferson County Bar Association is a not-for-profit association comprised of area attorneys.
Prizes include a chance at a hole-in-one car sponsored by Price Ford, and a scooter sponsored by Gary’s Automotive.
To get in the game, phone Port Townsend Golf Club at 360-385-4547.
Men’s Club tourney
Port Townsend golf pro Gabriel Tonan passed along word that the Men’s Club Championship has been put back on the calendar and will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27-28.
Cedars women golfers
Bonney Benson of the The Cedars at Dungeness Women’s Golf Association sent along a report on recent club activities.
Association members just wrapped “a very competitive two-day Club Championship with the low handicap ladies jockeying for the title,” Benson said.
Wanda Synnestvedt finally brought the course to its knees with a two-day gross total of 170.
Lori Oakes shot a net score of 144 for low-net honors.
The championship rounds weren’t all the excitement the Cedars women have seen on the course.
Playing in the Association’s normal weekly competition, Lori Wyngaert successfully avoided the pond guarding the 17th green and holed out for an ace.
“Organized play will continue through the end of October,” Benson said.
“It is not to late to get out there and play while we still have the beautiful weather.”
The Cedars women will host more than 120 golfers for the group’s annual Days of Whine & Roses Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
Benson said the number of golfers is a record for the event.
“[I] Guess, everyone wants to come over to enjoy our wonderful course and weather,” Benson said.
