A YEAR’S WORTH of bragging rights and personalized parking places go to Hazli Katsikapes and Brian Lux, the winner of the Port Townsend Golf Club’s Men’s Club Gross and Net Championships contested Aug. 12-13.

Kat-sikapes shot two steady rounds of 3-over-par 73 to come from one stroke back and win the gross title by four strokes 146 to 150 over a hard-charging Ronnie Harrell. Harrell was 10 shots off the pace after a first round 82, but fired back with a 68 in the final round despite more difficult pin placements and longer hole setups.

Lux shot a round of 79 (net 66) to break out of a three-way tie for second with Bret Roberts and Doug Collins and make up two shots on first-round leader Daryl Gillette a to claim the net title.

Port Townsend head pro and general manager Gabriel Tonan has an affinity for the history of golf and particularly enjoys using old-fashioned hickory stick clubs and dressing down in plus-fours.

He and the club will host its second annual Hickory Golf Scramble on Saturday, a two-person event where players use clubs from the 1920s.

“This a great experience to be able to play golf with the same style clubs Bobby Jones played with,” Tonan said.

Teams can share a rental set for $30, and the tournament fee is $25 per player. Call the club at 360-385-4547 to register.

Cedars women

Donna MacLean checked in with a season update for The Cedars at Dungeness Women’s Golf Association.

Play opened during a wet and rainy March “with just enough brave souls to fill two groups,” MacLean wrote.

“Today we have as many as six groups on a regular Tuesday golf day.”

The group welcomed ten new members have joined the club: Ann Flack, Madison Morris, Emily Cook, Victoria Cantelow, Sarah Shea, Cynthia Carpine, Yoon Park, Kris Slack, Janet Littlefield and Hysek Haglin.

And the members have been busy adding new events to the calendar.

“Our ‘Freeze Your T’s’ tournament, scheduled for the end of February, was snowed out. It then became ‘Burn Your Tee’s on July 8th, and was played in conjunction with the annual Wine Fest held at The Cedars at Dungeness,” MacLean said.

“The inaugural Member/Member event held in May was a resounding success.”

Club members also support Washington Public Links, Washington State Golf Association and Teams of the Peninsula (TOP), representing the Cedars at Dungeness Women’s Golf Association in various tournaments on the Peninsula and as far away as Lake Chelan, Wenatchee, Longview and Moses Lake.

“It is a great chance for us to meet other golfers, compete at other courses, and see more of our state,” MacLean said.

The club’s next big event is the annual The Days of Whine and Roses Invitational Golf Tournament, held Sept. 11-12.

“We anticipate more than 60 two-woman teams coming to our little piece of paradise to play in this event,” MacLean said.

The group meets for play Tuesday mornings at 8 a.m. from March to the end of October.

Those interested in joining can phone 360-683-6344, ext. 1 for details.

Is eight enough?

Peninsula Golf Club member Kerry Perkins collected his eighth career hole-in-one while playing the course’s 175-yard 14th hole Aug. 9.

Perkins used his 4-hybrid and a Titleist Pro VI ball on the shot. It was witnessed by Win Miller and John Rothchild, both of Sequim.

Teammates advance

Sequim’s Sarah Shea advanced to the First Flight Match Play Final at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship at Sandpines Golf Links in Florence, Ore.

Shea lost to Jessica Zelasko in a 20-hole match to finish second.

She defeated recently graduated Sequim High School teammate Alex McMenamin in a 20-hole semifinal match. Shea was three-up on McMenamin after nine holes but McMenamin rallied to tie and send the match to two extra holes.

Silverdale’s Brittany Kwon won the overall championship by one stroke over Ephrata’s Kenadee Peters. Kwon will be a junior at Central Kitsap this fall.

Demo days set

A pair of demo days are set next week, one running from noon to 4 p.m. today at Cedars at Dungeness and a Ping Golf demo from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at Peninsula Golf Club.

Representatives of Callaway, Cleveland/Srixon, Ping, TaylorMade and Titleist will be on-hand at Dungeness. Attendees also can enjoy free hot dogs at that event.

Walk-ins are welcome at the Ping demo at Peninsula, but appointments are available by calling 360-457-6501.

SkyRidge scramble

A three-person scramble tourney will be played at SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The event has a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Teams must play two drives and two approach shots by each player.

Lunch, team KPs and a team long putt are included in the price ($90 per team, $30 per player).

A $20 honey pot also is available.

To sign up, phone 360-683-3673.
