GOLF SEASON IS in fine form around the North Olympic Peninsula and beyond.
Our neck of the woods was represented recently by 11 boys and two girls at the Class 2A and 1A state golf tournaments.
Representatives from area golf courses also are playing in tournaments offered by the Washington State Golf Association and the Pacific Northwest Golf Association.
In central Oregon, Chimacum’s Shelton Washburn is defending his Super Senior title at the fifth Pacific Northwest Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship at Brasada Ranch’s Brasada Canyons course in Powell Butte.
Washburn shot rounds of 77, 75 and 75 to win his division at last year’s event at Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, B.C.
Washburn also has played on the Port Ludlow team during the Peninsula Cup.
It was early for the three-day-long, stroke-play tournament as I wrote this column, but Washburn was just coming off a birdie on the 172-yard par-3 fourth hole to put him in a tie for ninth place at one-over-par through four holes.
That was as of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Brasada Canyons was designed by PGA and Champions Tour player and noted goofball Peter Jacobsen, a Portland native, and his co-designer, Jim Hardy.
I expect a little bit of Jacobsen’s noted whimsy to have been captured in the course’s layout.
That tourney will wrap up Thursday.
Two North Olympic Peninsula teams were in competition at the Washington State Golf Association’s ninth Washington State Men’s and Women’s Member Club Team Championships on Monday and Tuesday.
The format for each championship was a 36-hole stroke play team.
The team score was calculated by counting two net scores and one gross score per hole.
Each competitor receives 100 percent of his or her course handicap for net scoring.
Each four-person team must be from the same WSGA member club.
Peninsula Golf Club members Dolly Burnett, Denise Clarke, Sherry Henderson and Rena Peabody competed in the final round of the women’s event on Tuesday.
They were in the middle of the pack after Monday’s competition, with a team score of 238, 26 back of the leaders from Orting’s High Cedars Golf Club.
A squad comprised of Port Ludlow members Tom Jones, Bob Bertoia, John Germain and Allen Panasuk played in the men’s championship.

Help Wilder Baseball
There is still time to play in Wilder Baseball Club’s first fundraising tournament, set for Cedars at Dungeness northwest of Sequim on Sunday.
The four-person scramble event will tee it up at 1:30 p.m.
There will be KP and long-drive prizes and a chance to win a car provided by Wilder Auto by virtue of a hole-in-one.
In a unique twist, players also can tee off with a baseball bat and golf ball on the par-5 sixth hole.
Cost is $100 per player, or $360 per team if paid all at one time, and will include green fees, cart rental, a box lunch and range balls.
Tee and green sponsorships are available for $100.
The players who comprise Wilder Baseball Club are the North Olympic Peninsula’s boys of summer, an elite Senior Babe Ruth team for players 17-18 and a junior team of players ages 14-16.
Players are welcome from all across the North Olympic Peninsula, and this year’s rosters include players from Jefferson and Clallam counties.

CASA golf benefit
Sign-ups are underway for the second Court Appointed Special Advocates Golf Tournament set for SunLand Golf & Country Club on Saturday.
All proceeds benefit children who have been removed from their families for abuse or neglect.
More than 210 children in Clallam County have been placed in foster care for their safety.
A four-person scramble format, the tournament is open to players of all skill levels.
Golfers can sign up individually or as teams.
Entry is $50 per player, $25 for SunLand members, and $40 for Peninsula Golf Club members (cart fee included for Peninsula members).
Carts for nonmembers are $15 and can be reserved through the SunLand Pro Shop.
The entry fee includes green fees, tee prizes, hot dogs at the turn, prizes and more.
There are prizes for best teams, longest drive and closest to the pin on all par 3s.
Last year’s tournament raised more than $3,700.
This money was used to enrich the lives of children in our communities.

SkyRidge anniversary
SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim is 11 years old this month and will celebrate the milestone with a SkyRidge Anniversary Golf Tournament on Saturday.
The two-person modified chapman event will have a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Cost is $70 per team and includes golf, range balls, lunch after play and a shot at KP and long putt prizes. A horse race contest may be held after lunch.
An optional honey pot is $30 per team.
Each player will hit a tee shot, and then hit each other’s ball for the second shot.
It then becomes an alternate shot, using the better of the two second shots.
Team handicap will be 60 percent of the low handicap player and 40 percent of the high cap player.
Cart use is $15 per seat.
Discovery Bay is 89
Port Townsend-area course Discovery Bay will offer reduced green fees of $8.90 on Saturday in recognition of the course’s 89th anniversary.
In addition, an 89-cent hot dog and soda special in the clubhouse snack bar is planned until 2 p.m., or while supplies last.
Wilson Staff is turning 100 this year, and in conjunction with the celebration, a Wilson Staff sales rep will be on hand to conduct a custom fitting/demo day with the brand’s newest product lines from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Discovery Bay’s Ladies Golf Clinic will tee it up for the first time Friday.
This is a six-week series of lessons covering everything from grip, stance and posture all the way through wedge play and how to hit a driver.
Golfers can choose from attending all six lessons for $50, or $10 per clinic.
Space in the series is limited in order to provide more instructor/student teaching.

PTHS alumni tourney
Port Townsend Golf Club will host the annual Port Townsend High School Alumni Association Golf Classic on Saturday, June 14.
Players don’t have to be PTHS alumni to participate in the tournament.
An 8:30 a.m. shotgun start is planned for the four-person scramble tournament.
A hole-in-one prize will be offered on the downhill, par-3 seventh hole.
Cost is $40 per player or $25 for current high school students or 2014 graduates.
