ONE OF THE most important fundraising golf events of the year will be held at SunLand Golf & Country Club in Sequim on Friday, May 13.
Golfers can get in some swings at the 25th annual Boys & Girls Club golf tournament and fundraiser, a benefit for the Sequim and Port Angeles units of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula.
These two locations provide a safe, supportive and fun environment after school and during the summer months for about 500 kids and teens.
Registration for the four-person scramble will begin at 11:30 a.m.
Practice on the driving range and putting green also will start at that time.
A 1 p.m. shotgun start is planned.
A boxed lunch will be provided to players in their carts.
The entry fee is $100 per person.
There will be some additional ways to help the club raise extra funds during the tournament.
Players in need of some spare swings can purchase a mulligan package for $25.
A split the pot raffle will be held with tickets $1.
Wine-loving golfers also will have the chance to putt for wine and will shoot for wine as a hole-in-one prize at the event.
The tournament is presented by 7 Cedars Casino.

Youth golf academy
The Olympic Peninsula YMCA and Peninsula Golf Club are working together on a golf academy for boys and girls ages 8 to 16.
Participants will learn and develop golf skills under the leadership of experienced golfers.
Participants will meet twice a week from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays from May 17 through July 1.
The academy is limited to 20 golfers.
The cost for the event is $55 for YMCA members, $65 for the public.

Skins games at Disco
Weekly Thursday night nine-hole skins games are underway at Discovery Bay Golf Club near Port Townsend.
The games begin at 5 p.m. with a $15 green fee and $10 competition fee.
The evening hours have always been my favorite time to play Discovery Bay, especially the sun-dappled back nine.

Ace at Peninsula
Dennis Ingram recorded the first hole-in-one of his golf career at Peninsula Golf Club on Tuesday, April 19.
Ingram used his 6-iron to hole out on the 145-yard 14th hole.
The single shot was witnessed by Tom Lowe, Joe Tweter and Gene Hitt.
SunLand in swing
Janet Real with the Sunland Women’s Golf Association checked in with news that the group recently held its first tournament of the season along with a luncheon and its spring general meeting.
Club officers for 2016 were elected at the event.
They are: Cheryl Coulter, captain; Ruth Lowe, treasurer; Geri O’Claray, secretary; Eileen Larsen, assistant captain; Mary Kubas-Meyer, handicap; Carol Goodman, team; Pennie Dickin, sunshine; Cecil Black, new members.
The association’s hole-in-one club will be discontinued in favor of the voluntary Sunland Hole-in-One Club, and all members are encouraged to join.
A new tournament, similar to the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup, will be held June 30 and July 7-8.
30 years and counting
The 30th incarnation of what has become known as the Sequim Spring Startup Invitational will tee off this week at Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim.
All the way back in 1986, two Boeing employees, Ray Talley and Ron Neyers, found a stay-and-play package at the then Dungeness Golf Course and Red Ranch Inn.
The pair had such a good time they decided to hold an invitational tournament with friends starting the next year.
Participation in the Red Ranch Invitational grew through the years and the event became known as the Ray Talley Invitational when Talley passed in 1998, before a change to the present name.
Players come from around the state, the Pacific Northwest, Florida and even Bangkok, Thailand.
Tournament administrator Mike Johnson flies in from Florida and has played in 27 of the 29 events.
Other longtime players are Mike Konicke with 25 years, Jerry Olson with 19 years and Bill Millar, now of Thailand, with 18 years.
“Sequim and The Cedars at Dungeness have been the choice for the tournament due to the weather, the choice of lodging, the golf course food service and the helpful staff at the golf course,” Neyers said.
Golf for Wolves
Golf 4 Grads, a four-person scramble event, is planned for Cedars at Dungeness on Sunday, May 15.
All proceeds from the event will help fund the Sequim High School Class of 2016’s safe and sober graduation night party in June.
A shotgun start will open the day’s play at 10 a.m.
The cost for the tournament is $85 per player and includes green fees, use of cart, lunch, KP’s, a long- drive contest, and chances at hole-in-one prizes.
Honey pots and a helicopter ball drop contest also are planned.
No handicap is needed to play.

Spring Shotgun
Peninsula Golf Club will host the 55th annual Port Angeles Spring Shotgun over Memorial Day Weekend.
This two-day stroke-play event features the biggest prize percentage payout on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Practice rounds are included in the $120-per- player entry fee.
A shotgun start will open play at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29.
PC athletics tourney
Cedars at Dungeness will host the Peninsula College Pirate Athletic Association Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 4.
The four-person scramble is $100 per player and include green fee, cart, tee prize and lunch.
Three men’s divisions and a women’s division are planned.
Players will have a chance to win one of four hole-in-one prizes including a shot at $10,000.
A $20 extras package including two mulligans and two raffle tickets also can be purchased.
Tee sponsorships also are available.
