MANY A FOURTH of July has been spent waiting for the sun to set, or at least up here where summer doesn’t start until July 5, for the onset of darkness and the rockets red glare of community (and neighborhood) fireworks celebrations.
A round of golf is a superior way to pass that time and players have some options Thursday.
Discovery Bay Golf Course near Port Townsend will host its annual Red, White and Blue Scramble on Thursday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
The scramble is hosted by Discovery Bay’s Men’s and Women’s golf clubs. Members of the public are welcome to play in the event, according to head pro Jeff Kent.
A potluck picnic will follow play with golfers asked to bring a dish for the event.
Kent said there is plenty of space in the Discovery Bay refrigerator to store dishes. So golfers should get creative and bring along a crowd-pleasing item for folks to enjoy.
The cost for the event is $10 plus Discovery Bay’s usual green fees for nonmembers.
Kent said the course is in great condition and the greens are running true and fast.
To get in on the game, call the pro shop at 360-385-0704 ASAP and let them know you are coming to play.

Moving west, Cedars at Dungeness has plenty of open tee times on the Fourth of July, but no special Independence Day-related deal.
SkyRidge Golf Course has an annual Stars and Stripes Tournament, but that event will be held Saturday.
The two-person tournament is a 27-hole event featuring a front nine of better ball on the front nine from the green tees, followed by nine holes of scramble play from the green tees and capped by nine holes of alternate shot play from the silver tees.
The cost is $90 per team, $45 per player, and includes golf, range balls, food, KPs and a long putt entry.
A honey pot is available for $20 per person.
Carts are an additional $15 per seat.
