MICHAEL CARMAN ON GOLF: Port Ludlow hosts tournament July 26

THERE’S A GOLF component to this year’s Festival by the Bay in Port Ludlow.

A tournament is planned on the event’s opening day, Friday, July 26, at Port Ludlow Golf Club.

This is a great chance for North Olympic Peninsula golfers looking to shake things up with a mini-vacation or a day trip.

Check-in begins at 11 a.m. for the 18-hole four-person scramble event, with lunch planned for noon and a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

An awards presentation will wrap up events at 6 p.m., just in time for golfers to head off for a bite to eat in advance of an 8 p.m. concert by Navy Band Northwest at Festival by the Bay headquarters near the Port Ludlow Marina.

Festival admission passes are included in the golf tournament prices of $35 for Port Ludlow members and $75 for the public.

Players also get range balls, KP prizes and a chance for a $10,000 prize with a hole-in-one on a designated par-3 hole.

Music and all sorts of vendors are planned all weekend, and there’s even a fireworks display beginning at 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 27.

Lots of golf available in the area too, if festival-going isn’t your thing.

Players can head in to Port Townsend Golf Club or Discovery Bay Golf Club, trip across the Hood Canal Bridge to White Horse Golf Course in Kingston or Gold Mountain near Bremerton.

Salish Cliffs is a gem near Shelton on U.S. Highway 101.

Patriotic tourney set

Was your Fourth of July revelry a bust rather than a boom?

I went grocery shopping and watched the movie “Silver Linings Playbook,” so I can’t complain.

Golfers will have a chance to remedy any holiday grumbles as SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim will hold a Stars and Stripes Golf Tournament on Saturday.

The two-person, three-format 27-hole event has a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.

Players will face a scramble format from the black tees on Skyridge’s back nine and a better-ball from the front nine’s green tees, before wrapping with nine holes of aggregate from the back nine’s silver tee boxes.

Registration is limited to the first 28 two-person teams.

Cost is $80 per team and includes lots of golf, range balls, food and $5 for competition money.

A honey pot is $20 per person, and carts are $15 per seat.

Healthy Families of Clallam County is the beneficiary of an inaugural golf tournament at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course in Sequim on Saturday, July 27.

Proceeds from the event will support survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse in Clallam County.

The event begins with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at Cedars, and entry is $90 for the public.

Cedars members should inquire at the pro shop at 360-683-6344 for their entry fee.

Entry includes a golf cart, greens fees, box lunch, winner prizes and an awards ceremony.

Several other contests are planned, and there will also be a hole-in-one prize.

Registration forms must be received by Saturday to ensure a spot.

The tournament reflects an expanded effort by the Olympic Peninsula Boeing Bluebills to assist programs that address domestic violence and sexual assault.

The Bluebills, which include retirees from Boeing and other volunteers, donate time and skills to various community projects.

Last year, the Bluebills hosted a successful golf tournament at Port Ludlow on behalf of Dove House in Port Townsend.

Free junior golf in July

Port Townsend is offering free junior greens fees with a paid adult greens fee all July long.

The fairways are firm, the greens are rolling solid and it’s a great time of year to play in Port Townsend.

Real Women Golf

Barb Aldrich checked in to tell me “Real Women Golf” is the motto of the Port Townsend Women’s Golf group, and a host of ladies have joined in recent weeks and months.

Two new members, Shelley Peterson and Marti Zeigler, have pushed membership to 23 ladies.

Port Townsend assistant pro Gabriel Tonan recently conducted a chipping clinic for the group, an important skill to practice on any course but even more so on some of Port Townsend’s smaller greens.

The Port Townsend ladies tee off at 9:30 a.m. each Tuesday, with a 9 a.m. gathering in the clubhouse for pairings.

Summer league slated

Discovery Bay’s Summer League will begin its eight-week schedule with a team scramble on July 18, and wrap with a final on Sept. 19.

The weekly events will be held Thursday nights at 5:30 p.m.

Regular season competitions will begin July 25.

Four-player teams are needed, and all teams are responsible for their own substitute players.

A wholly, separate Monday Night Skins game is in progress.

Cedars junior camps

Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim will host golf camps for ages 5-9 and 10-16 on July 29-30 and Aug. 1.

The younger ones will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on July 29-30, and 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 1.

The older kids will attend from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., July 29-30, and from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 1.

Putting, chipping, the full golf swing and etiquette will be taught over the first two days.

The last day, campers will be grouped according to age and play a tournament.

Youngsters will play a four-hole tourney, while the older kids will play from four to nine holes.

A cookout and awards presentation will follow the tournament.

Cost is $80 and includes teaching fees, greens fees, range balls, a barbecue, awards, snacks and a gift.

Friends of OCS tourney

Sign-ups are still available for the inaugural Friends of Olympic Christian School Charity Golf Tournament at Cedars at Dungeness on Saturday, July 20.

The scramble format event has a 9 a.m. shotgun start, and the $85 entry fee includes greens fees, a bag of goodies, use of cart and a buffet lunch.

Players will have the chance to win a $10,000 prize for a hole-in-one on Cedars’ fourth hole, and a new Nissan courtesy of Wilder Auto Center on the 17th hole.

SunLand junior camp

SunLand is taking registrations for its junior golf camp, set for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. July 22-25.

Golf skills, sportsmanship — including rules and etiquette — golf and “near-golf” experiences will be taught.

Kids will be able to participate in fun games and activities, including a water-balloon toss, and each student will receive a PGA Sports Academy book and bag tag.

Cost is $75, and registration is available at the clubhouse or at

The camp is limited to the first 25 who register.

Viva Las Vegas events

The SunLand Women’s Golf Association is set to host Viva Las Vegas-themed events on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17.

A nine-hole “Best Poker Hand” scramble will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, followed by casino games, food and a no-host bar at 4 p.m.

A continental breakfast will kick things off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by an 18-hole two-woman Better Ball competition.

This round includes tee prizes, raffle prizes and low gross and net prizes that will be awarded during a luncheon following play in the SunLand ballroom.

Participants are encouraged to wear attire that carries out the Viva Las Vegas theme (like an Elvis jumpsuit).

Prizes will be awarded for the best theme attire.

Practice balls will be provided both days at the SunLand driving range.

Handicap numbers are required and ladies need a partner.

The cost to play Friday and Saturday is $90 per person.

Golf on Saturday only is $75 per person.

Golf cart rentals are available for $15 per seat for 18 holes, and $7.50 per seat for Friday’s nine-hole event.

The entry deadline is Aug. 9.

Cedars 18-hole group

Bonney Benson checks in with news that Cedars at Dungeness Woman’s 18 Hole Golf Association keeps growing, with the recent addition of new members Dot Forshee and Lynn Mangum.

The ladies have just completed the first round of the President’s Cup, an annual summer match play event. Eliminated players are playing in a separate regular game while the winners compete for the top spot.

Entries for the group’s annual “Days of Whine & Roses” invitational continue to pour in.

Invitations were sent to golf courses, both private and public statewide.

Benson reports that “response, so far, as been great!”

These ladies tee off at 8:30 a.m. each Tuesday through October.

Players should arrive by 8 a.m. to set up pairings/discuss any business.

Lady Niner’s outing

A group of 16 golfers wore some combination of red, white or blue during a Lady Niner’s nine-hole low net game at Cedars at Dungeness on July 4.

Lisa Ballantyne and Andi Grams tied at the top of Division One with scores of 35 each, and Lindsay Busch was first in Division Two with a 35.

Sandy Gunn had birdies on holes eight and nine, and Vernice Quigley birdied No. 4.

The ladies will play Crazy 8’s on the front nine Thursday.

Check-in starts at 9:30 a.m. with a 10:30 a.m. tee time.
