Ludlow hosts events
Spectators take note: Port Ludlow Golf Club is hosting some of the best women amateur golfers around this week for the 110th Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur and 10th Women’s Mid-Amateur championships.
Competitors played 36 holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the match play field in each championship.
After the first day, University of Tennessee player Chessey Thomas of Spokane and former Pepperdine University star Jayvie Agojo of the Philippines were tied with even-par rounds of 72.

University of Southern California player and returning champion Rachel Morris is tied for third at 1-over 73 with Samantha Postillion of Burr Ridge, Ill., Mallory Kent of Tukwila and Philippine National Team members Chihiro Ikeda and 2008 champion Cyna Rodriquez.
In the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, Anita Wicks of Roseburg, Ore., Beth Wrigley of Nine Miles Falls and Ann Swanson of Redmond are tied for the lead at 9-over 81.
Match play starts today at Port Ludlow, and spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Husky dinner slated
The first Sonny Sixkiller Husky Celebrity Golf Tournament presented by Wilder Auto on July 29 is a sell-out, according to Olympic Medical Center Foundation director Bruce Skinner.
But don’t fret Husky fans, you’ll still have the opportunity to meet the 32 Husky legends who will participate in the tournament at a dinner and auction prior to the event at 7 Cedars Casino at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 28.
Husky legends scheduled to be at the dinner include former football head coach Don James, 2001 Rose Bowl MVP Marques Tuiasasopo, Bob Schloredt, Nesby Glasgow, Jim Mora, Jim Lambright, Steve Emtman, Dane Looker and many others.
Three Port Angeles High School graduates — UW running backs coach and former Roughrider and University of Idaho running back Joel Thomas, Scott Jones, a Husky tight end and offensive tackle who is the only Rider to play in the NFL, and Bernie Fryer, a former Rider and collegiate basketball star who played and refereed in the NBA.
Robb Weller, a former Husky Yell King credited with inventing the “Wave” at Husky Stadium in the early 1970s and who later co-hosted “Entertainment Tonight” with Mary Hart, will serve as the emcee for the dinner.
Several items — including autographed Husky memorabilia, trips to Mariners spring training in Arizona, Indianapolis 500 trips and dinner with Sixkiller prior to a Husky game, will be auctioned off.
Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased by calling the Olympic Medical Center Foundation office at 360-417-7144.

SkyRidge tourneys
SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim has two tourneys on tap in July: the sixth annual Lavender Festival Golf Tournament on July 16, and the Clallam Links British Open on July 17.
The Lavender Festival event is a two-person scramble format fundraiser for the Disabled Veterans of Foreign Wars.
A 9 a.m. shotgun start will kick off what will be a good day for a good cause.
Cost is $45 per player, with Captain Henry’s gourmet blackened salmon dinner with all the fixings served following play.
Carts are $15 per seat, and a $10 honey pot will be available.
Those wearing Lavender Festival buttons will receive $2 off their cart fee.
The Clallam Links British Open will begin after the final round of The British Open ends in England.
It’s an individual medal play competition that will start with lunch at noon and tee times at 1 p.m.
There are three divisions: men with a 0-15 handicap, men with a 16-and-over handicap and a women’s division.
The men will play from SkyRidge’s black tees on the front and green tees on the back. Women will play from the silver tees on the front and purple on the back.
Players can form their own foursome for play or have the clubhouse do the matching.
There will be a $1,000 payout based on a full field.
Cost for the tourney is $50, with half going for golf and the other going for a honey pot.
To sign up for either SkyRidge event, phone 360-683-3673.
Pro golf tidbits
The 2011 British Open tees off Thursday at Royal St. George’s in England.
Television coverage begins at 4 a.m. our time on ESPN on Thursday and Friday and 4 a.m. on ABC on Saturday and Sunday.
A recap show of the days events will run at 4 p.m. on ESPN.
Congrats to 2011 U.S. Women’s Open champion So Yeon Ryu. She overcame the awful weather at the Broadmoor in Colorado to win the tourney in a playoff over South Korean compatriot Hee Kyung Seo.
All these South Korean golfers are disciples of 1998 U.S. Open champ Se Ri Pak.
I remember watching that 1998 tournament while on vacation at the Sylva, N.C. home of my namesake uncle, Mike Colton, a Port Angeles native.
