MICHAEL CARMAN’S GOLF COLUMN: North Olympic Peninsula courses to host two junior tourneys

THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST Golf Association will hold its boys and girls junior amateur events on the North Olympic Peninsula this year.

Boys will play the 58th annual event at Port Ludlow Golf Club the week of Aug. 6-10 with girls competing in the 57th annual championship at SunLand Golf & Country Club in Sequim from Aug. 13-16.

Golfers must be 17 years old or younger as of Aug. 10 (boys) and Aug. 16 (girls).

Players must also have GHIN handicaps of less than 24.4 (boys) or 40.4 (girls).

Boys will play two stroke-play qualifying rounds before match play begins mid-week.

Girls will play one stroke-play round before match play begins.

Cost is $150 for each tournament.

Registration is available at tinyurl.com/JrBoysTourney or tinyurl.com/JrGirlsTourney.

Kudos to Port Ludlow and SunLand for their continued support of junior golf.

Memorial Tournament

Registration is due Thursday for a memorial tournament hosted by The Cedars at Dungeness Lady Niners.

The Thursday, April 26 tournament will honor dearly departed ladies golfers while raising funds for Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County.

The recent passing of Cedars at Dungeness member Virginia Dvorshak due to lung cancer will make this tournament especially poignant.

“She played golf right up to these past two weeks knowing the end was very near, yet she never lost her positive attitude and competitive spirit,” Lady Niners member Lee Stanley wrote.

“She will truly be missed.”

Ladies groups from all four Clallam County courses and lady golfers with a GHIN handicap are all invited to participate.

Registration is $20, which includes a light lunch. The bulk of this fee will go toward hospice programs.

Golf will cost $15 for walking Nine Holes or $25 for golf and cart, and will be paid directly to The Cedars of Dungeness Golf Course.

Golfers should arrive by 9 a.m.

No cash prizes will be awarded but the pro shops of each of the four Clallam golf courses — Dungeness, Peninsula Golf Club in Port Angeles, and Sequim’s Skyridge Golf Course and SunLand Golf & Country Club, will provide awards to first- and second-flight ladies on their own designated hole.

These holes will be in honor of ladies from their club who have passed on.

For more information, phone Jan Boyungs at 360-797-1452.

PAHS DECA tourney

Port Angeles High School DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) students will host its fourth annual DECA Golf Scramble fundraiser at SkyRidge on Saturday.

The tournament begins at 9:30 a.m.

Fees are $200 for a four-person team or $50 per individual.

The fee is $20 for Port Angeles students with an Associated Student Body card.

Entry fees, payable by check, can be made to SkyRidge.

Lunch is included in the cost.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Port Angeles High School DECA students.

Tournament play includes 18 holes of golf, range balls, prizes from local businesses, lunch, and a mulligan table.

Golf carts are also available for purchase for $12.

To sign up, phone DECA advisor Jennifer Kunkel at 360-565-1530, Emma Acheson at 360-477-2527 or Christina Costello at 402-650-2231.

DECA is a student-led organization that allows students to travel to conferences and competitions to demonstrate and expand their knowledge in the fields of marketing, business and entrepreneurship.

SunLand qualifier

SunLand will host an ESPN Best Ball Qualifier on Saturday, April 28.

Entry is $45, including greens fees. Players must have a GHIN handicap.

For more information, phone SunLand’s Tyler Sweet at 360-683-6800.

Also, SunLand is offering a $34.95 golf and cart special for the public on weekends in April.

Thursdays in April

The $11 events will continue until Discovery Bay’s Commercial League begins play on May 3.

Players should arrive at 4:30 p.m. for a 5 p.m. shotgun start.

Going to the dogs

To celebrate Discovery Bay’s “dog friendly” policy, the course will hand out doggie bags with treats and toys Sunday on Earth Day.

Those dogs playing nine or eighteen holes with their biped friends are eligible.

I will add a plea to please clean up after Fido while out on the course.

Nobody wants a fairway surprise!

Grand opening

Discovery Bay’s restaurant Rosa’s Delicia Mexicana or Rosa’s for short, will hold a grand opening event on Sunday, April 29.

Rosa’s hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
