MICHAEL CARMAN’S GOLF COLUMN: SkyRidge wins Peninsula Cup

HOME COURSE ADVANTAGE triumphed once again as the team from SkyRidge Golf Course claimed the Peninsula Cup, the fourth time in the event’s five-year history that the host course earned top honors.

The victorious SkyRidge team members are Scott Mackay, Adam Mackay, Jerry Pedersen, Evan Still, Shane Price, Richard Fisher, Lance Gardner and Jeff Pedersen.

Peninsula Golf Club’s Gary Thorne was the top individual, shooting a gross score of 2-under-par 70.

SkyRidge’s Richard Fisher and Discovery Bay Golf Course’s Richard Boyd tied for low net honors with identical 68s.

Congratulations to the winners and a big round of applause to Ray DeJong, the lead event organizer/player wrangler for the Peninsula Cup, and to 7 Cedars Casino for their support of the event.

Centennial tourney set

A golf tournament to celebrate the Sequim Centennial is planned for SkyRidge on Saturday, May 18.

The event is a two-person scramble and right now that’s all the information I have on the event.

Phone SkyRidge at 360-683-3673 for more information.

CASA Golf Tournament

Signups are underway for a Saturday, June 8, golf tournament benefit at SunLand Golf & Country Club in Sequim for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program.

Proceeds will benefit foster children in Clallam County.

The tourney is a four-person scramble open to players of all ability levels.

Golfers can sign up as a team or as an individual.

Entry is $50 per player, $25 for SunLand members and $40 for Peninsula Golf Club members. These member fees include use of cart.

Carts are $15 per person for the general public.

The entry fee includes green fees, prizes and hot dogs at the turn.

There will be prizes for best teams, best drives and closest to the pin on all par-3 holes.

For more information, phone Henry Meyer at 360-683-4783, Val Brooks at 360-565-2644 or SunLand’s pro shop at 360-683-6800, extension 13.

Sponsor OCS tourney

Sponsorship opportunities exist for the inaugural Friends of Olympic Christian School Charity Golf Tournament set for Cedars at Dungeness on Saturday, July 20.

Diamond Level sponsorships are $1,000, and include on-course GPS advertising, large tee box and green advertising signs, dominant recognition on course banners and all external advertising (radio, newspaper, posters displayed throughout Sequim and Port Angeles), and free golf for up to four players.

Platinum sponsorships are $500, and include on-course GPS advertising, large tee box and green advertising signs, dominant recognition on course banners and all external advertising displayed throughout Sequim and Port Angeles, and golf for two players.

There’s also a $100 Gold Level sponsorship with on-course tee box and green advertising and external advertising.

I’ll have more about the tournament itself in an upcoming column.

For more information, phone the OCS office at 360-457-4640, or email ocs@olympicchristian.org.

Sixkiller tourney set

The third annual Sonny Sixkiller Husky Golf Classic presented by Wilder Auto Center will feature what is described as “the strongest field of celebrities yet” at Cedars at Dungeness on Friday, July 26.

There are still a few spots open for the tournament — interested golfers should call the Olympic Medical Center Foundation, the charitable beneficiary for the tournament — at 360-417-7144.

“We are delighted to be a part of this tournament; we think it is the premier sporting event on the Peninsula,” said Jerry Allen, the CEO of Seven Cedars Casino.

“We have been very fortunate to partner with Sonny for the past 11 years.”

Sixkiller, the Husky quarterback legend, has a list of more than 30 Husky greats set to play in the tournament, including former coaches Don James and Jim Lambright, Bob Schloredt, Lincoln Kennedy, Michael Jackson, Nesby Glasgow, Marques Tuiasosopo and former University of Washington and Port Angeles High School player Scott Jones, the only Roughrider to have played in the NFL.

Discovery Bay ladies

The Discovery Bay Ladies meet to draw up teams/get organized at 8:30 a.m. each Thursday with tee times set for 9 a.m.

A game of Hidden Holes is set for Thursday, and the continued streak of summer-like weather is expected to continue.

A nine-hole game that plays at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays is also held.

Discovery Bay club pro Dan Swindler will be giving group lessons to the ladies club starting at 10 a.m. Friday, June 7.

Ladies interested in playing in the Discovery Bay ladies weekly games or in taking one or more of his lessons, can phone the clubhouse at 360-385-0704.

Recent competitions included Low Putts on April 25 and a Better Nine with Half Handicap event on May 2.

Barb Aldrich and Lynn Pierle tied for first in the Low Putts event with 31, followed by Sheila Kilmer in third with 32.

After the half-handicap was applied last week, Edna Chicarell came out on top with a 34, Pierle was second with 37 and Kilmer finished third with a 40.5.

SunLand WGA info

Nancy Harlan checked in with some info on the SunLand Women’s Golf Association’s (SWGA) first tournament of the year on May 2.

The ladies played a game of 1-2-3 Waltz under a beautiful, blue sky.

First-place team winners were Cecil Black, Nadia Saulsbury and Harlan with a 127.

The second-place team was Cynthia Edel, Effie Bentley and Nonie Dunphy with a score of 136.

Following the tournament, the ladies enjoyed a luncheon and held their Spring General Business Meeting.

SunLand is a supporter of the Tee It Forward movement, an initiative to speed up the game of golf and to make it more fun and accessible by having players move up a tee box and play from distances that more accurately represent a player’s ability and provide a chance for lower scores.

A whole new set of silver tee boxes were installed to help promote this idea.

After play, the SWGA members discussed the ramifications of playing the silver tees, and clarified how this would affect play.

Members also discussed their Ladies Invitational on Aug. 16-17, with all ladies from other golf clubs invited and encouraged to participate.

This will be a two-person team event, with details to follow once they have been finalized.

Also honored and thanked at the meeting were Alice Myers and Ruth Lowe for their outstanding work in developing, printing, and distributing the SWGA Yearbook.

They were each given a colorful plant in appreciation of their work.

PGC Merchants League

Peninsula member Paul Reed checked in to say the Peninsula Golf Club Merchants League is off and running in its 26th year.

Reed praised the ability of Peninsula pro Chris Repass and golf shop staffer Sunny Carter in getting the 19 teams with more than 130 players off the tee with “grace and ease.”

The AmSan team leads through early play with 37 points, ahead of Fryer Insurance with 28.5 and the tied-for-third teams of Triggs Dental Lab No. 2 and the Dream Team.
