PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles linebacker Jason Hawes was named the Olympic League defensive Most Valuable Player while five of his teammates were named to the league’s first team and another four to the second team.
Hawes led the Roughriders with 135½ tackles this season, helping to lead the team to a 7-4 record and a berth in the state 2A playoffs. He also had four quarterback sacks, three caused fumbles and a fumble recovery. Hawes, who had several long returns all season, including a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown against Olympic, also made the first team special teams as a punt/kick returner.
Also making the defensive first team was Port Angeles defensive back Parker Nickerson. He also made the league’s second team offense as quarterback.
Making the first team offense were Roughriders wide receiver Blake Sohlberg and tight end Ezra Townsend. Tanner Flores made first team as an offensive lineman.
Punter AJ Martinez also made the first team special teams..
In addition to Nickerson, another four Riders were named to the second team. Tucker Rygaard made second team as a defensive lineman and Kason Albaugh and Landyn Jones were both named as linebackers. Sohlberg was named to the second team as a defensive back.
These nine players were part of a deep team that made history for the Roughriders. Port Angeles beat Olympic for the first time since 2011, beat Sequim for the first time since 2014 and qualified for the state playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Sequim also had five players named to the second team.
Making the second-team offense were Liam Wiker as a running back, Patrick Elias as a tight end, and Ayden Holland and Brayden White as offensive linemen. Making the second team special teams as a kicker was Jack Henninger.
Named to the league’s sportsmanship team were Port Angeles’ Wyatt Leitz and Sequim’s Holland.
North Kitsap wide receiver Logan Sloman was named the league’s MVP while Bainbridge quarterback Jack Grant was named the offensive MVP. North Kitsap was the league champion.
