POULSBO — Sequim’s Blake Wiker and Thomas Hughes claimed the Olympic League boys doubles tennis championship on Thursday at North Kitsap High School.
The duo will have the league’s No. 1 seed at the West Central District Tournament next Friday and Saturday at the Kitsap Tennis and Athletic Center.
The Wolves’ Raymond Lam also advanced to districts in singles play.
Woods second for PA
Port Angeles will send Hayden Woods in singles and doubles duo Bo Bradow and Milo Whitman to districts along with sophomore Wyatt Hall, who finished fifth and will be an alternate at the tournament.
Hall knocked out teammate Jaidon Seibel in the consolation rounds.
“We did well, we are happy,” Roughriders coach Brian Gundersen said.
Woods lost in the finals to Bremerton’s Garrett Lawson to finish the two-day tourney with a 3-1 mark.
Woods won his semifinal match over North Kitsap’s Sam Horn in straight sets, but it wasn’t as easy as it sounds.
“He had a great first set then got up 5-1 in the second set,” Gundersen said. “Give credit to the North kid, he fought back to take the lead 6-5 and then Hayden battled back and got it to a tiebreak and won the tiebreaker.
“You obviously don’t want to let a lead like that slip, but it says a lot about Hayden that he was able to let it get away from him but still step up and maintain and get the win.”
Bradow/Whitman advance
Bradow and Whitman lost 6-4, 6-3 to Wiker and Hughes, but won their next two consolation matches to finish third.
“They played well in every match the last two days,” Gundersen said.
“They are in a groove and peaking at the right time. Every set was a game against Wiker and Hughes.”
