OUTDOORS: Salmon daily limit now 1 on West End rivers

Tugboat captains talk to Anglers chapter

Salmon limit down to one on West End

FORKS — The daily limit for salmon has been reduced to one fish for the Quillayute River system through Dec. 15.

The action is in effect on the Bogachiel River from the mouth to the U.S. Highway 101 Bridge; the Calawah River from the mouth to the U.S. Highway 101 Bridge; the Dickey River from the Olympic National Park boundary upstream to the confluence of the east and west forks; the Quillayute River from the Olympic National Park boundary upstream to the confluence of the Bogachiel and Sol Duc rivers, and the Sol Duc River from the mouth to the concrete pump station at the Sol Duc Hatchery.

Anglers must release sockeye and wild coho. The minimum size to retain salmon is 12 inches.

A reduced daily limit is necessary to protect salmon returning to the Quillayute watershed. Low flows have resulted in coho and chinook holding in the lower river and not moving upstream to spawning grounds. Returning salmon abundance will be monitored and regulations may be modified as additional information becomes available.

SEQUIM — Towboat captains Roger Slade and Rebecca Close will present “What Could Possibly Go Wrong?” at Wednesday’s meeting of the North Olympic Peninsula chapter of Puget Sound Anglers.

The meeting is set for the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, with doors at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starting at 7 p.m.

A short business meeting, fishing reports and raffle drawings will follow the presentation.

The raffles are for members only, but the public can join the chapter at the meeting for $25, or $35 for a family membership. Membership also includes The Reel News monthly newspaper.
