PENINSULA ADVENTURE SPORTS: More than 300 diehards tackle the GOAT Run

PORT ANGELES — More than 300 runners endured the hills and trails of Kelly Ridge in the annual Great Olympic Adventure Trail run, with the 50K winner hailing from Sequim.

The GOAT Run is one of several endurance events, arguably the toughest, put on by Peninsula Adventure Sports around the Olympic Peninsula. It goes along the Olympic Adventure Trail with all the finish lines at the Log Cabin Resort on Lake Crescent. Runners came from as far as Maine and Pennsylvania for the event.

Taking first in the 50K (31 miles) was 28-year-old Lachlan Hinwood of Sequim in a time of 4 hours, 6 minutes and 35 seconds. He won by nearly 30 minutes over the second-place runner, Addison Howenstine of Seattle (4:35:34).

This is no ordinary 50K as it is all on dirt trails and entails more than 3,800 feet of vertical gain.

In third was 64-year-old Andrew Hinwood, also of Sequim, in 4:42:48. Michael Higueara of Port Angeles, a fixture in local distance events, was fourth at 4:51:14.

The top 50K female also was from Sequim and a repeat competitor in Peninsula Adventure Sports events. Heidi Hietpas came in first with a time of 5:00.02, beating Colleen Duncan of Seattle by six minutes (5:06:20). Hietpas was fifth overall and Duncan sixth.

In the marathon, Mark Buckner of Billings, Mont., was the winner in a time of 3:55:19. It was a relatively close finish with five runners within five minutes of Buckner. In an incredibly close race for second, Austin Henry of Seattle had a sub-four hour time in 3:57:49.79 while Michael Shelby of Bremerton was right behind at 3:57:49.96.

The best local finish was by Bryan Bakker of Chimacum, who was sixth at 4:09:47.79.

The best women’s finish was by Laura Caravello, who came all the way from Irwin, Pa., to race. She finished in a time of 4:15:40, good for seventh overall.

The 13-mile half-marathon, with more than 200 participants, was split up into two waves. The best time was by the first wave’s winner, Roman Kirvov of Chehalis, who finished in a time of 1:24:29.65.

The winner of the second wave was another local repeat winner of both road running and trail running, John Mauro of Port Townsend. Mauro had a time of 1:30:19, which was second-best overall. The top women’s time was in the second wave, by Amber Arndt of Kent, at 1:34:00, which was the third-best time overall.

A total of 209 people ran the half-marathon. The marathon had 38 runners and interestingly, the more-difficult 50K had 56 finishers.

Peninsula Adventure Sports also puts on the Big Hurt on Sept. 28 in and around Port Angeles. This four-discipline event includes 15 miles mountain biking beginning in the hills above the city, a 2.5-mile kayak leg through Port Angeles Harbor, a 30-mile road cycling leg west of Port Angeles and a 10K run along the Olympic Adventure Trail east of town, with people competing both as individuals and as part of teams. Signups are still being taken at www.tinyurl.com/BigHurtRegister.

Also, on Sept. 29 is the Little Hurt for kids, held at Peninsula College. This event is for pre-schoolers to eighth-graders and entails cycling, running and rowing machines. People can register at www.tinyurl.com/LittleHurtRegister.

Peninsula Adventure Sports also puts on other events such as the Salt Creek 24 on Oct. 26-27, the Frosty Moss Relay, the OAT Run and the Gravel Unravel.
