PENINSULA ADVENTURE SPORTS: Toughest of the tough take on the 24 hours at Salt Creek

SALT CREEK — Through rain, shine and the dark of night, more than 100 individuals and team members ran and walked around the Salt Creek Recreation Area for hours on end this weekend in the second running of the Salt Creek 24.

The Salt Creek 24 is the newest event put on by Peninsula Adventure Sports, which also puts on the Frosty Moss Relays, the OAT and GOAT runs and the Big Hurt in and around Port Angeles. The event features both individuals and teams running laps at the Sal tCreek Recreation Area for as much as 24 hours Saturday overnight into Sunday. Several individuals and seven teams ran or walked more than 23 straight hours.

The title sponsor of the event is Welly’s Real Fruit Ice Cream and the presenting sponsor is Olympus Plumbing.

The race featured an extremely close finish between two teams.

The individual winner was Dan Greer of Deer Park, who completed a total of 77 laps and ran 107.8 miles, the distance of four marathons. His total time was 23 hours, 45 minutes, 50 seconds.

Coming in second was Jerry England of Bremerton, who competed 73 laps and went 102.2 miles in 23:41:11.

Third place was Sean Camfield of Tacoma, who also cracked 100 miles at 100.8, completing 72 laps. He did this in a time of 22:43:41.

The top woman was Elizabeth Castillo of Tacoma, who completed 59 laps and went 82.6 miles in 21:45:17. Tabatha Collins was the second-place woman. She went 52 laps and 72.8 miles in 23:52:22. Third place was Trisha Haggerty of Port Angeles, who completed 50 laps and 70 total miles in 23:16:06.

A total of 78 individuals participated with 63 running or walking the distance of a marathon (26-plus miles). A total of 33 participants went at least 50 miles.

A total of 12 teams also competed with seven of the teams going for more than 23 hours.

The winning team was Girls on the Run Westsound, who went 130.2 miles and 93 laps in 23:56:34. A very close second was Salty Beaches, which also completed 130.2 miles and 93 laps. However, this team’s time was slightly slower at 23:59.14.

In third was Sun’s Out Buns Out, which went 77 laps and 107.8 miles in 23:51:40.

The event raised at least $7,000 for local charities with donations still coming in, said Lorrie Mittmann with Peninsula Adventure Sports.

The winner of the Last Runner Standing was Brandon Morales of Seattle.

In the Last Man Standing, 13 runners raced up the trail to the top of 1,100-foot Striped Peak and then back until everyone but one person dropped out.

The race began at 9 a.m. Saturday and ended nearly 17 hours later at 1:51 a.m. Sunday, with 17 summits of Striped Peak, a total of 66 miles raced and about 20,000 feet of elevation climbed.
