PENINSULA COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Pirates fall to Bellevue in defensive battle

Men’s soccer team shuts out Everett 3-0

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team went toe-to-toe with the top team in the North Region in a tough, defensive battle that came down to one shot in the final minutes.

The Pirates lost to first-place Bellevue 51-50. Peninsula had a 50-47 lead late in the second half, but the Bulldogs’ Rokki Brown made a pair of baskets 30 seconds apart to give Bellevue a lead with three minutes left.

“It was a good defensive effort. Bellevue, in my opinion, is one of the best defensive teams in the NWAC,” said coach Alison Crumb. “It was one of those games that it was hard to get shots. They ended up getting the last one.”

Monday’s game was a makeup of an earlier game postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.

Neither team scored was able to score those final three minutes. The Pirates missed shots on consecutive possessions and the Bulldogs missed two shots, as well. Bellevue also missed two free throws in the final seconds to give the Pirates a chance, but Peninsula couldn’t get a shot off in the final eight seconds.

The Pirates held Bellevue to 35 percent shooting from the floor (20-for-57), but against the Bulldogs’ defense, the Pirates shot just 36.5 percent (19-for-52).

Tasiah Little led the Pirates with 19 points, hitting three 3-pointers and shooting 6-for-9 from the floor. Crumb said she was also tasked with defending Bellevue’s best player, which seemed to open up her offense. Hope Glasser of Sequim High School had a great game on the boards, pulling down 15 rebounds to go with her eight points and four assists.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak and dropped the Pirates’ record to 7-5. Peninsula next plays on the road against Everett (5-3) on Wednesday, then returns home to play Olympic (0-11) at 2 p.m. Saturday.

PORT ANGELES — The North Region champion Peninsula men’s soccer team got two quick goals early in the match from Tim Deser and held on to beat Everett 3-0 on Monday.

Deser scored his first two goals of the year unassisted. His first came in the fifth minute off a ricochet off another player in the box with the Everett keeper out of position.

Deser scored six minutes later off a Peninsula free kick. After the free kick was cleared out of the box, he got the loose ball and hit a long-range shot for a goal.

Peninsula picked up an insurance goal late in the first half on a beautiful run by Yutatsu Taira, who made a solo run from the ball beyond midfield, beat a number of defenders and then beat the keeper on a pretty shot.

From that point on, the Pirates held on in the second half. They allowed just one shot on goal. Alejandro Lopez picked up the win in goal.

Peninsula (8-1) finished the season on a seven-game winning streak, but will not get a chance to play in the playoffs. The Pirates will return next fall, with most of their players from this spring returning with an extra year of eligibility.

The Peninsula women’s soccer team (7-0) had its Monday game canceled. The women finished their season May 17 with an unbeaten record.
