PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Lefties avoid sweep with 7-3 win over Cowlitz

LONGVIEW — After losing their first two games against the Cowlitz Black Bears, the Lefties’ bats came alive Sunday to salvage the final game of the series 7-3.

The Lefties pounded out 14 hits, including four doubles.

Newcomer Devean Alvarez (Fullerton State) went 3-for-5, including a double, while Derek Bogh was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Will Mulflur was 2-for-5 with a run scored and BY Choi was 2-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs.

Danny Briones (Riverside Community College), another newcomer, was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Adam Paganelli was 1-for-3 with a run scored, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs.

On the mound, Andrew Hauck started, going five innings and allowing no earned runs on four hits. He struck out four. Luke McCullough (Utah Valley State) picked up his first win of the year, going 2⅔ innings and allowing three hits and one run. Trey Maeker went the final 1⅓ innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out two.

Hauck, McCullough and Maeker didn’t walk a single batter all game.

Friday, Saturday games

The Lefties lost 5-1 on Saturday and 11-5 on Friday to Cowlitz.

In Saturday’s loss, the Lefties had eight hits and 12 baserunners total, but stranded seven runners.

Alvarez had a single and RBI for the Lefties, while Colin Curry had a single and scored a run. Briones had a hit and two walks.

On the mound, Owen Dueck (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo) started and took the loss. He went four innings, allowed six hits and four earned runs. He walked three and struck out three. Relievers Nick Sanchez, Andrew Monson and Chandler Freeman (Baylor) all pitched well, going four innings combined, allowing three hits, one earned run and one walk. They combined for two strikeouts.

On Friday, the Black Bears scored six runs in the first inning against Lefties starter John Pfeffer and never looked back in an 11-5 win. Pfeffer and reliever Ryan Wike (Centralia College) only allowed nine hits, but they allowed two home runs, including a first-inning grand slam to Aaron Parker, and three doubles. Parker added a home run Sunday.

At the plate, the Lefties’ Ethan Flodstrom had one of his best games of the year, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Mulflur had a double, a run scored and an RBI, while Weston Penninger went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Mason Persons hit a double.

The Lefties (14-24) are scheduled to return to Civic Field for a rare Monday makeup game at 6:35 p.m. today with Kamloops, then host the Redmond Dudes beginning Tuesday for a three-game nonleague series.
