PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Lefties drop pair of games to Kelowna

Team returns to Civic Field on Tuesday.

KELOWNA — The Port Angeles Lefties pitching staff struggled and their bats went quiet in a 13-0 loss to the Kelowna Falcons on Saturday night.

The Lefties played a rare Sunday night game after press deadline. Look for results on that game online at www.peninsuladailynews.com and in Tuesday’s sports section.

The Lefties had a much better game Friday, losing a tight pitchers’ duel 3-2.

In Saturday’s loss, the Falcons cranked out 14 hits to the Lefties’ four. Kyle Becker (Nevada) and Aiden Arriaga (College of the Desert) each had doubles with Arriaga going 2-for-4 total. Ethan Young (Lafayette College) also had a single.

Starter Reid Rasmussen (Central Washington) took the loss, giving up six earned runs in 1⅔ innings. The trio of Jake Petty (Waldorf College), Kailen Kimata (Pierce College) and Mauricio Guardado (Los Angeles Mission College) pitched well, combining to go four innings while allowing no runs, one hit, three walks and five strikeouts.

Friday’s game

KELOWNA — The Port Angeles Lefties got outstanding pitching from Garrett Holpuch and Wes Peninger and a home run from Chanz Doughty, but it wasn’t enough in a 3-2 pitchers’ duel loss against Kelowna on Friday.

Starter Holpuch (Centralia College) went five innings, allowing only three hits and one earned run. He struck out seven and walked two. Peninger (Utah Valley) pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out two. He allowed no runs. Kimata was the hard-luck loser, pitching to two batters in the sixth inning, allowing a double. That runner later came in on an error.

At the plate, Doughty (Edmonds Community College) belted his home run in the fourth. The Lefties scored another run in the fifth when Becker got on base with a single and came in to score on a balk and an error.

The Lefties were able to get runners on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth but couldn’t bring a run home. In the ninth, Julio Vasquez walked and moved to second with a stolen base, but with two outs and the tying run on second base, the Falcons ended the game with a strikeout.

Becker finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Vasquez (Howard) was 2-for-3 with a walk and stolen base. Isiah Walz (Concordia College), Roberto Nunez (Embry-Riddle) and Brock Mayer (Chaffey College) all had hits.

The Lefties (4-10 second half, 12-29 overall) have Monday off for a travel day. They return to action at Civic Field in Port Angeles at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday to play Edmonton.
