KELOWNA, B.C. — The Port Angeles Lefties beat Kelowna 5-3 Saturday night behind a solid pitching effort from Wyatt Haccou and Keiran Shaw, picking up the new team’s first win of the year.
Haccou went 6 1/3 innings, giving up just five hits and one earned run to earn the win, while Shaw came in to relieve with one out in the seventh, pitching 2 2/3 and giving up one earned run. Haccou struck out four while walking two, while Shaw walked just one batter in picking up the save.
The Lefties (1-2) got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning. Trent Bryan started the game with a walk, then he stole second. Jake Portaro walked, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Sean Roby then drove in the Lefties’ first run with a single.
Roby stole second base, then on an error by Kelowna’s catcher, Portaro scored and Roby took third. Roby later came in to score on a fielder’s choice out by Marten Pauwells to make it 3-0.
Kelowna scored in the first and seventh innings, leaving the Lefties holding on to a close 3-2 lead entering the ninth. But they were able to add a couple of insurance runs in the ninth. Dutton Elske started the inning with a leadoff single. Mikey Hooper got on on an error, then Bryan walked to load the bases.
Jake Portaro picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch to make it 4-2. Roby hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Hooper from third base to make it 5-2. Kelowna added a run in the bottom of the ninth and had runners on second and third with only one out after a hit batsman and two singles. But Shaw was able to get a strikeout and a foul out to end the game with no more damage.
Roby ended the game with two RBIs. John Burghardt had a double for the Lefties. Jarrett Thoren had two hits, both singles, while Bryan got on twice with walks.
The Lefties played Sunday evening after press deadline. They return from their brief road trip to central British Columbia to Port Angeles tonight for their second home game at Civic Field against Kelowna, beginning a weeklong home stand. That game will begin at 6:35 p.m.
