PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Lefties struggle against Riverhawks in 16-2 loss

PORT ANGELES — The Edmonton Riverhawks got up on the Port Angeles Lefties early, then erupted for nine runs late to run away in a 16-2 win at Civic Field on Wednesday night.

Edmonton got up 7-0 after four innings, but relievers Cade Stuart (Edmonds Community College), Kailen Kimata (Pierce College) and Jake Petty (Waldorf College) kept the Riverhawks’ bats in check over the next four innings, allowing just one run as the Lefties tried to get back into the game.

Chase Taylor (Hawaii Pacific) hit a two-run home run in the sixth to help the Lefties’ cause, making it 7-2. It was his fifth home run of the season. That is tied for the third-most in the West Coast League. Five Edmonton runs in the eighth inning and four more in the ninth put the game out of reach, however.

Edmonton finished with 18 hits. The Lefties, who have been struggling at the plate of late, managed six hits. Trent Jackson (Hawaii, Hilo) went 2-for-4 with a double, while Brock Mayer (Chaffey College) was 2-for-3 with a walk. Corey Jarrell of Vanguard University had a hit and scored a run.

The Lefties (4-13, 12-32 overall) wrapped up their home series with Edmonton (7-10, 14-30) on Thursday after press deadline. They have their final road trip of the season, and it’s a long one, beginning Friday for a three-game series against Bellingham, then travel to Edmonton, Alberta, for a three-game series next week. They finish with three games at home Aug. 4-6 against Bellingham.
