PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties got great pitching all weekend against the Yakima Valley Pippins. The Pippins’ pitching was simply better in a three-game sweep, however.
Lefties’ bats were tamed all weekend as the Pippins shut out Port Angeles twice and allowed only three runs in three games.
The sweep was completed Sunday in a 3-0 Yakima Valley win at Civic Field on Sunday. Tyler Frieders, who has a 5-1 record for the Pippins, held the Lefties hitless through the first five innings.
Port Angeles finally broke through with a pair of singles in the sixth by Adam Paganelli and Will Mulflur. They moved to second and third on a putout by BY Choi, but Riley Parker flied out to end the threat. It was the only serious threat all day against Frieders, who allowed just three hits and two walks on the day.
Six Lefties’ pitchers took the mound Sunday, allowing 10 hits and six walks, but only two earned runs. The Pippins stranded 14 runners as Lefties pitchers kept Port Angeles in it all game.
Port Angeles (14-29, 3-13 second half) has today off, then goes on the road Tuesday for a road trip to Kelowna, B.C., for a three-game series against the Falcons (18-21, 6-8).
Port Angeles also lost 4-3 on Saturday and 3-0 on Friday.
Friday, Saturday games
The Lefties lost a pair of pitching duels Friday and Saturday and if not for one Pippins’ batter, they might have won both games.
Port Angeles had a chance to pull out a win Saturday over Yakima Valley, getting two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, but couldn’t get a clutch hit, falling 4-3 to the Pippins.
The game featured great pitching by both teams, as neither the Pippins nor the Lefties could manage to score after the fifth inning.
Dillon Dibrell started and took the loss, giving up four earned runs in two innings. Andres Quinones, Ryan Orr, Luke McCullough and Trey Maeker went the final seven innings and allowed just one hit, three walks and no earned runs. The staff struck out eight total Pippins.
But the Lefties could only manage seven hits themselves. Pagenelli went 3-for-5 with a run scored, raising his West Coast League batting average to .390. Mulflur was 2-for-4 with two RBIs on a bases-loaded single in the fifth inning. Ethan Flodstrom and Colin Curry also had singles and Riley Parker had an RBI on a sac fly.
The Pippins’ Owen McWilliam hit a home run in the second inning, his second homer in two days, driving in three runs.
Port Angeles did have one golden chance in the bottom of the ninth. Curry started the rally with a one-out single, and Paganelli followed up with a two-out base hit to put the tying run on second and the winning run on first. Mulflur hit a grounder to end the threat, however.
The Lefties were shut out as a trio of Yakima Valley pitchers allowed just four hits in a 3-0 loss Friday.
The Lefties’ Liam Paddack had an outstanding game, going seven innings and allowing just two earned runs on six hits. He struck out seven and walked one.
In fact, the only Pippin who did much damage against Paddack was McWilliam, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Andrew Monson pitched the final two innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit and two walks. He struck out one.
The Lefties’ Paganelli, Parker, Choi and Danny Briones all hit singles.
