MOUNT VERNON – The Neah Bay boys basketball team has advanced to the Class 1B Tri-District championship game.
The fourth-ranked Red Devils will play top-ranked and undefeated Lummi on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at Mount Vernon Christian School. Both teams have secured spots in next week’s regionals and will be playing for seeding as well as the district title.
Neah Bay advanced to the championship game by defeating Shorewood Christian 72-59 in the semifinals Thursday.
Abraham Venske paced the Red Devils with 19 points, while Ryan Moss put up 15 and John Reamer scored 12.
The Neah Bay girls, meanwhile, will play for third place at the Tri-District tournament Saturday. They will face host Mount Vernon Christian at 2:30 p.m.
The Red Devils lost in the semifinal to Crosspoint 59-50 on Thursday and then slammed Muckleshoot 64-45 on Friday afternoon.
Gina McCaulley led Neah Bay on Friday with 14 points and Faye Chartraw and Blaire Hill each scored 10.
The Neah Bay boys and girls are the only two North Olympic Peninsula basketball teams still alive in the postseason after the Sequim boys and Chimacum boys lost in their district tournaments Thursday.
The Wolves fell to Olympic 59-41 at the Class 2A District 2/3 tournament as the Trojans pulled away in the final quarter, outscoring Sequim 33-11.
Alex Barry, playing his final high school game, scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Wolves.
Chimacum lost to Charles Wrights 61-48 at the Class 1A West Central District tournament.
Boys Swimming and Diving
FEDERAL WAY – Port Angeles’ John Macias heads into the second day of the state championships with the first and second seeds in two individual events.
Macias is first in the 100-yard freestyle and second in the 100 backstroke after Friday’s preliminaries.
He also is swimming with Port Angeles’ 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, both of which are ranked second after the preliminaries. Joining Macias in those relays are Tristin Butler, Jay Liang and Wei-Yan Fu.
Like Macias, Butler has advanced to Saturday in both of his individual events, the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.
Other area swimmers who earned their way to the second day:
–Jay Liang, Port Angeles: 200 individual medley.
–Fu, Port Angeles, 100 butterfly.
–Eric Prosser, Sequim, 100 backstroke.
Crescent was the area’s top diver Friday, coming in seventh at the preliminaries. Port Angeles’ Scott Methner is ninth and Sequim’s Mathew Craig is 16th.
