PREP BASEBALL: Bainbridge too much for Riders second time

Forks baseball, Sequim and PA softball all win big

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys baseball team was right in the mix with powerful 3A Bainbridge after a four-run second-inning, but Bainbridge got some big hits the rest of the way en route to a 13-4 win over the Riders on Tuesday.

The Spartans are a team the Riders nearly defeated Monday. Despite Bainbridge being a 3A school with a 12-1 record, coach Zac Moore said this is a team that Port Angeles can stick with. Bainbridge needed a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh to beat Port Angeles 4-3 on Monday.

“These games make us stronger for sure,” Moore said. “We can compete against that team. We didn’t compete today.”

In the Riders’ one big inning, Port Angeles took advantage of some wild Bainbridge pitching. Jordan Shumway was hit by a pitch, Ezra Townsend singled and Kole Acker walked to load the bases. Josiah Gooding and Alex Angevine both walked to drive in two runs.

Colton Romero then hit a two-run double as the Riders took a 4-3 lead. It was short-lived, however, as Bainbridge came back with four runs in the top of the third on a walk, two singles and a double to take a 7-4 lead.

From that point on, the Riders had trouble generating offense against Bainbridge’s pitching as Port Angeles tallied just three more hits for the rest of the game. The Spartans continued to tack on runs almost every inning. The Riders trio of Colton Romero, Elijah Flodstrom and Kaleb Mullen finished with eight strikeouts on the mound.

The loss puts the Riders at 8-4 in the Olympic League (11-5 overall), second among 2A teams. Port Angeles looks to get back on the winning track at 4:15 p.m. today at Civic Field against Kingston (1-8, 4-8).
