PORT ANGELES — North Mason was aggressive at the plate and on the base paths from the first inning on in knocking off the Port Angeles baseball team 9-5.
“They seemed to get those two-out hits and pick up a run or two here and there,” Roughriders coach Vic Reykdal said.
“It was their eighth game and our [third], and right now our guys need some AB’s [at bats] and some live base running.”
The Bulldogs scored once in the first inning after starting pitcher Hunter Hohmann singled, stole second and was brought home after a single by Jakob Urdahl.
North Mason pushed three more across with a two-out rally in the second inning on Roughriders starter Ryan Mudd.
Mudd walked Trey Benson with one out and got the next North Mason batter to pop out to shortstop.
He then allowed a single to No. 9 batter Zac Marks, a two-run double to deep left-center field by Hohmann and a one-run double down the left-field line by Daniel Burggraaf.
Port Angeles (0-1, 0-2) outhit North Mason 11-10 on the game, but had trouble stringing together consecutive hits in the early going and bringing in runs with runners in scoring position.
In the bottom of the second, Jace Bohman singled for the Riders, followed by a fielder’s choice by Travis Paynter and a single by Curran Bradley.
Zac Withrow loaded the bases for Port Angeles after reaching on a fielding error, but consecutive pop outs by Austin Roberson and Logan Ciaciuch closed the door.
The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the top of the third and three more in the fourth inning to lead 8-0.
Port Angeles had runners at the corners with two outs in the third after singles by Larsson Chapman and Bohman, but Bohman was caught stealing second to end the inning.
“That one was on me, I called for the steal right there,” Reykdal said.
Mudd struggled with his control in the fourth, allowing two walks and two wild pitches, and a Riders throwing error allowed two North Mason runs to score.
Port Angeles got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, with Ciaciuch reaching on an infield single, Mudd singling to left field and Larsson Chapman plating Ciaciuch with a sacrifice fly.
After an Ethan Boyer fly out to center, Mudd ran the Riders out of the inning by trying to take third base on a Bohman groundout.
“That was tough right there; kind of broke one of the cardinal rules of baseball, don’t get the third out at third base,” Reykdal said.
“I just hope we can use it and learn from it.”
Bulldogs pitcher Jon Hennigsen was ineffective in relief of Hohmann in the sixth inning, allowing four hits, two walks and four Port Angeles runs.
Adam Iseri Fujii walked to get things going for the Riders and reached third on a single by Withrow.
Connor Heilman then singled through the gap at shortstop to plate Iseri Fujii.
A Ciaciuch walk loaded the bases, and Mudd hit a bloop single to short right field to score Withrow.
Chapman then hit a fielder’s choice that scored the Riders’ final two runs.
The hard-throwing Burggraaf pitched the seventh for North Mason, striking out two and deftly snagging a lined shot back at him from Withrow to close the contest.
Port Angeles (0-2, 0-3) is off for spring break and will visit North Kitsap (3-0, 4-1) on Tuesday, April 8.
