PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Windle, Kilmer, Reaume lift Forks; Sequim wins on road; mistakes hurt Port Angeles

BEAVER — The Forks baseball team got a great pitching performance from Carson Windle, who struck out seven and allowed no earned runs in an 8-7 win over Kingston.

The Spartans had to hang on for dear life to win, however. After Windle was taken out of the game, some Spartans errors allowed the Buccaneers to score six runs in the sixth inning, making the game close at the end.

“We continued to play steady and worked the bases even after the big inning for Kingston. It’s definitely what I like to see from a younger team, there is no quit in them. We did a great job maintaining focus and scoring where we could,” said coach Jason Richard.

Dalton Kilmer led the way for the Spartans, going 3 for 4 with a triple, while Joseph Reaume scored three runs.

Forks (2-2) will next play at Port Townsend (1-0) in a nonleague game at 4:15 p.m. Friday. The Redhawks’ lone game so far this season was a 6-1 win over the Kingston JV.

SAMMAMISH — Johnnie Young’s sacrifice fly scored the go-ahead run in extra innings and the Wolves added an insurance run to get past the Sammamish Totems in a nonleague contest on Monday.

Zach McCracken’s single opened the top of the eighth for Sequim and courtesy runner Connor Bear moved into scoring position by stealing second base.

A one-out single to center by Joey Oliver moved Bear to third and he came home on Young’s sacrifice.

Oliver later scored on an error after swiping second, Sequim’s 11th steal of the game. He finished 2 for 4 with a walk, three runs and an RBI to lead the Wolves at the plate.

Johnnie Young went 1 for 3 with a walk, two runs and an RBI and Brandon Barnett added a two-run single. Hayden Eaton was 1 for 3 with a walk and three stolen bases.

Oliver hit a batter with two outs in the bottom of the eighth but quickly forced the final out to preserve the victory and cap three otherwise clean innings

Sequim (0-1, 2-2) hosts North Mason (0-1, 2-4) today.

BAINBRIDGE — The Roughriders had a rough go of it with a solid-hitting Spartans squad in a nonleague contest on the road.

“Tough one tonight,” Port Angeles coach Karl Myers said. “We ran into a very offensive team, they had a bunch of really good hitters and they took advantage of mistakes.

“Our pitchers really competed hard, particularly Bo Bradow coming out for 2 1/3 scoreless innings [and] keeping us in the game.”

The Riders did pound out 10 hits in the game. Ethan Flodstrom was 3 for 4 with a double, a run and an RBI while Gavin Guerrero was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs.

Lucas Jarnagin also doubled and singled for Port Angeles.

“Offensively, we swung it well, [we] just couldn’t seem to find the clutch hit we needed to get us back into the game. Overall though, we had a lot of positives to take from it and are going to learn from it going forward.”

The Riders (1-0, 2-3) host Sequim at Civic Field at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

CHIMACUM — Coming off a no-hitter thrown against them by South Whidbey, the Chimacum Cowboys responded by pounding out 13 hits and scoring 18 runs in an 18-4 win over Quilcene.

The Cowboys broke out of their offensive slump in a hurry, scoring nine runs in the first inning.

Issac Purser went 2 for 3 with a double, two stolen bases, three runs scored and three RBIs. Cody Clark went 2 for 2 with a run scored and two RBIs and Cole Dotson went 2 for 2 with a run scored, two walks and two RBIs.

Henry Brebberman went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, two runs scored and three RBIs. Ben Preston went 1 for 1 with two runs scored, a stolen base, a walk and an RBI and Wyatt Pennington was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Nathon Richards and Hunter Cerna each hit doubles.

For Quilcene, Robert Comstock III went 3 for 3 with a double, four stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI. Chase Newman and Holdem Elkins each had a hit and a walk, with Elkins adding an RBI.

On the mound, Chimacum’s Arron Serrato and Brebberman combined for 4 1/3 innings with two earned runs, four hits, three walks and eight strikeouts. Brebberman picked up the win.

Chimacum (3-2) plays the Port Angeles JV at 4:15 p.m. today at Civic Field. Quilcene (1-0, 1-3) will host Seattle Lutheran at 4 p.m. today.
