BLAINE — The Chimacum basketball girls split a pair of games at the Blaine Holiday Invitational, narrowly losing to Vashon 40-36, but coming back to beat Granite Falls 54-48, thanks to 26 points from Mechelle Nisbet.
In the Vashon game Dec. 28, coach Trevor Huntingford said the Cowboys did a fair job of executing at times, but have to be more consistent.
“When we applied pressure in the manner we can we got what we wanted in the game, and when we didn’t Vashon got what they wanted and in the end that really was the difference. We just didn’t play defense as a unit consistently enough,” he said.
Nisbet led the Cowboys in scoring with 12. Maddie Dowling scored seven, while Grace Rayley and Jada Trafton each tallied six. Shanya Nisbet scored three and Alice Yaley two.
In the Dec. 29 game against Granite Falls, the Cowboys actually built up a big lead, but partly because of foul trouble, allowed the Tigers to get close late.
“We got out of the gate earlier, applied great pressure, handled theirs and got the looks we wanted and led at one point by 18. We suffered some serious foul trouble in the second half and again I think a few of us lost focus, feeling overly secure in the large lead. Ultimately Granite Falls was scrappy and fought right back into it in the fourth quarter,” Huntingford said.
Huntingford said Mechelle Nisbet had a “monster game” with 26. Grace Yaley and Shanya Nisbet each added nine points. Trafton had six, while Alice Yaley had four.
Chimacum (6-4, 1-2) next plays at 5:30 p.m. today against Vashon again at Vashon.
