JOYCE — Crescent School’s brand-new gym floor is still in search of its first home team basketball victory, after Clallam Bay swept a nonleague boys and girls doubleheader between the North Olympic League rivals.
Clallam Bay won the turnover margin by 10 in both games Wednesday night as the Bruin girls (2-2) held off their Crescent counterparts (0-4) 27-25, while the Clallam Bay boys (3-2) rode a big second half for a 44-35 win over the Loggers (0-5).
“Tonight was good training, we need to work on blocking out and some other things, but I was impressed with how both teams played,” Crescent boys coach Darren Heaward said.
A rare pre-opening tip technical foul opened play in the boys contest as Crescent was whistled for an incorrectly assigned jersey number in the official score book.
Clallam Bay junior Kelly Gregory knocked down two foul shots and without an opening tip or a tick of the clock, the Bruins had a 2-0 lead.
The teams were tied at 6 apiece after one period.
Crescent senior Kaleb Dodson had eight of his 14 points in the second quarter, scoring on a turnaround shot in the post, an inbounds pass play and two putbacks as the Loggers ran up a 21-16 halftime advantage.
“We were trying a matchup zone in the first half and our boys just weren’t grasping it,” said Clallam Bay coach Kelly Gregory.
“I knew it was a nonleague game so I thought we would try some things.”
Crescent pushed the lead to 25-16 with 6:50 to go in the third before a slew of turnovers allowed the Bruins back in it.
The Loggers had seven giveaways in the third and nine in the fourth quarter compared to nine second-half turnovers overall for Clallam Bay.
Those free possessions and timely shooting by the Bruins led to a 16-0 run across a 7:15 stretch at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters.
“That was a good stretch there, we kind of woke up a little bit and got back into it,” Gregory said.
Calvin Ritter was a physical presence inside during the run, pulling down rebounds and scoring baskets on a strong take to the rim and a bank shot off the glass.
Ritter finished with 10 points, banging with Dodson in the low post much of the evening.
“The big guy, he stepped up for us,” Gregory said of Ritter.
The Bruins took the lead late in the third quarter on a long Alan Greene jumper and a basket by Gregory pushed the lead to 31-28 going into the fourth.
Gregory led the Bruins with 14 points and Greene had 10.
Clallam Bay pushed the lead to 38-28 and its largest lead of the night, 43-30 in the fourth off more strong play from Ritter and steals and layups from junior point guard Casey Randall.
The Loggers host Oakville on Saturday, while the Bruins play at Wishkah Valley.

JOYCE — The Bruins dressed only seven players and received a scare in the first minute of the game when sophomore Zeria Signor grimaced in pain and limped to the Bruin bench with an apparent ankle injury.
“We’re going to have low numbers all year, the girls know this and they are getting used to it,” Clallam Bay coach Kathleen Winter said.
Crescent jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and it looked like it might be a long, tiring night for the Bruins with just one substitute available.
After a stint on the bench, Signor’s return midway through the first quarter helped spark the Bruins.
This included a Signor score on a screen and cut to the basket play that Clallam Bay would draw on throughout the game, and a rebound off of a missed free throw and putback to cut the Logger’s lead to 10-7 after one period.
Freshmen stepped up for both teams in the second quarter, with Clallam Bay point guard Mariah Lachester knocking down two jumpers and Crescent’s Alyssa Hutto hitting two shots of her own, including a jumper off the dribble with 10 seconds left in the half.
Hutto’s shot kept Crescent in the lead, 14-13 at halftime. She led all scorers with 10 points.
“Alyssa was real strong for us out there, she’s not afraid at all for a freshman,” Crescent coach Brian Scott said.
Lachester kept up her strong play at the point, grabbing a steal and scoring a layup and then canning two free throw’s as Clallam Bay took the lead 19-14 with 5:06 to go in the third.
“She had a really good game for us, scoring and controlling the tempo,” Winter said.
Lachester and Signor led the Bruins with eight points each.
Crescent junior Shannon Williams ended the Loggers 5:15 scoring drought with a jumper to close within 19-16 with 3:45 to play in the third.
Inga Erickson knocked down a bucket from the left side of the floor to give Clallam Bay a 21-20 lead heading to the final frame.
Signor scored two baskets inside for the Bruins in the fourth, including an impressive jumper in the lane over the outstretched arms of Crescent’s tallest player, Shannon Williams to give Clallam Bay a 25-22 lead.
Erickson scored off a well-executed inbounds pass to put Clallam Bay up 27-24 with 2:40 to go in the game.
After a free throw by Crescent’s Meghan Shamp cut the Bruins’ lead to 27-25 with 2:29 to play, the Loggers had three good looks at the basket to tie the game, but all three rattled off.
Both teams return to action Saturday. Crescent goes for a home win against Oakville on Saturday, and Clallam Bay plays at Wishkah Valley.
