PREP BASKETBALL: Neah Bay girls wipe out Sequim 67-29

Crescent boys win ninth straight

NEAH BAY — Neah Bay continued its run through the North Olympic Peninsula, dusting Sequim 67-29 to earn its second girls basketball victory over a Class 2A opponent in as many days.

The Red Devils beat Port Angeles 60-27 Tuesday.

“We played amazing,” coach Cherish Moss said. “It was just a different type of game in a sense. PA runs set offenses and is very disciplined with their calls. Sequim is different. They like to run with the ball in transition a little more. And we knew who was going to shoot the ball for them.”

Neah Bay held Sequim to 11-of-59 shooting (19 percent), including 1-of-21 from beyond the arc.

Olympic League MVP Jolene Vaara was limited to five points on 2-of-10 shooting.

Wolves freshman Gracie Chartraw, who played as an eighth-grader on the Red Devils’ state title team last winter, struggled to a 2-for-29 shooting night.

“We knew they only had two shooters so we could send two or three defenders,” Moss said. “I hate to gamble, but we kind of gambled a bit on defense because of their style.”

Wolves coach Joclin Julmist gave praise to Neah Bay.

“We couldn’t buy a basket,” Julmist said. “Neah Bay played well.

“Bobbi [Mixon] was our best player tonight. She was steady, she had 10 points for us. She played with confidence.

“Gracie struggled tonight from the field. She was very aggressive but had an off night. She had seven points [and] she left it all out on the court.”

Moss said her team was able to push the ball in transition.

“We got a lot of fast-break transition points,” Moss said.

Neah Bay led 27-13 at halftime and put the game out of reach with a 24-7 third quarter sparked by Qwaapeys Greene. Greene scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the quarter.

Wiinuk Martin also lifted the Red Devils with 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

“Q and Wiinuk really came off the bench and played well for us,” Moss said. “We had some off shooting, but that’s OK, because we mainly focus on our defense to generate our offense. We can have different leading scorers every night with how we play.”

Amber Swan added 12 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Sequim (2-1, 3-2) hosts Steilacoom at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Neah Bay (5-1) visits Tri-District rival Mount Vernon Christian on Thursday.

JOYCE — The Loggers were in the holiday spirit, setting up teammates for made baskets to cut down their ninth straight victory.

“We had another great game sharing the ball with 18 assists on 29 baskets, and after our recent foul line struggles, we shot a passable percentage from the charity stripe,” coach Chris Ferrier said.

Lukas Love stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks. Dom Sprague scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds, Peyton Watson had five steals, and Henry Bourm scored 13 points.

“The guys have really bought in, and we are playing pretty well,” Ferrier said. “We still have a few things to tighten up, but it’s hard to argue with the results.”
