PREP BASKETBALL: Neah Bay’s McCaulley scores 25 in win over Clallam Bay

CLALLAM BAY — Led by Gina McCaulley’s 25 points, the Neah Bay girls basketball team broke open a close game and ran past Clallam Bay 73-40 for a North Olympic League win.

The Red Devils led by just one point, 12-11 after one quarter. Hannah Olson was hot for the Bruins in the opening period, knocking down eight of her team-high 16 points.

Clallam Bay even took a 15-14 lead with 4:30 left until halftime.

Courtney Swan and Lalia Greene had the answer late in the first half, combining to hit 7 of 7 shots on steals and assists to each other during a 15-0 run for Neah Bay.

Swan was close to a quadruple-double in the game, finishing with 16 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and seven steals.

McCaulley hit on 9 of 13 shots, including 4 of 8 3-point attemps and all five free throw tries, to account for her 25. She added four assists, three steals and a block.

Greene had 11 points for the Red Devils along with six assists, four steals and four rebounds.

Ruth Moss scored eight and grabbed nine rebounds with four steals and three assists for the winners.

Sidney Smith had eight points for Clallam Bay and Miriam Wonderly added seven.

Neah Bay (4-0, 12-1) hosts Crescent (2-2, 2-10) tonight.

JOYCE — Senior Raine Westfall recorded a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Loggers to a blowout win over the Bears.

“Raine had a phenomenal game from start to finish,” Crescent coach Kelly Serrianne said. “She had some great passes, inside moves and aggressive rebounds.”

Senior Hannah Lee added nine points and seven rebounds.

“The girls played very well,” Serrianne said. “We started to put into motion the things we have been practicing all year and they clicked tonight. We ran effective plays and excecuted our defense better. We were really working as a team.”

Crescent (2-2, 2-10) visits Neah Bay tonight.

TACOMA — The Rangers shook off early foul trouble against and experienced team to take down the Crusaders on the road.

“They stayed positive and kept battling,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said of her team. “Tacoma Baptist is a tough environment to play. A loud Crusader crowd and questionable calls really tested the kids tonight and they maintained their focus and played some of their best basketball yet.”

Weller said she was extremely pleased with how well her team played against a more experienced, deeper opponent.

“They worked hard on defense (11 team steals), outrebounded the Crusaders offensively and defensively, shot really well from the field (35%), and got great looks and shots from their offensive sets,” Weller said. “The girls shared the ball well offensively and had 13 total team assists.”

Gina Brown scored 12 points, with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

“She was our offense in the first half,” Weller said. “She was money in the post.”

Abby Weller got hot in the second half and shot 50 percent from the field, finishing with 14 points, nine rebounds, six assists, five steals, and a block.

Sydney Brown scored nine points with seven rebounds, three asissts and a block.

Quilcene (6-3, 8-7) visits Evergreen Lutheran tonight.

CLALLAM BAY — The Red Devils ran out to a 21-1 lead to open the game led by Sean Bitegeko who scored 13 of his game-high 30 points in Neah Bay’s 26-point first quarter.

Bitegeko added 11 rebounds, eight steals and two assists.

Tobias Croy added nine points, four steals and three assists and Ollie Kallappa scored nine with four rebounds and three steals for the Red Devils.

Neah Bay, without starter Keith Johnson Jr. (illness) and Captain Claplanahoo (injury), held down Clallam Bay’s leading scorer Ryan McCoy. McCoy had 17 to lead the Bruins. Caiton Smith added 14 points for Clallam Bay.

The Red Devils (4-0, 6-7) host Crescent tonight.

Clallam Bay (1-3, 2-7) visits Chief Kitsap Academy (3-1, 4-10) tonight.
