PREP BASKETBALL: Poised Sequim boys win big over Neah Bay; Neah Bay girls take down Sequim

NEAH BAY — Sequim coach Greg Glasser wanted to see poise from his team in a nonleague showdown with Class 1B No. 1 Neah Bay.

He wasn’t disappointed as senior Alex Barry and the Wolves s produced a measured, composed performance in a sound 84-64 defeat of the Red Devils on Wednesday.

“Poise was one of the words up on the white board before the game,” Glasser said.

“I told them before the game what a great opportunity they had to play in this atmosphere, in this environment, and not only did we not react to anything, we handled their pressure very well for the most part.”

Barry poured in 37 points, 15 of them coming from deep bombs well beyond the 3-point line, to lead four Wolves in double figures. He also had 17 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Jackson Oliver and Payton Glasser added a dozen points apiece and point guard Dusty Bates had 10 for Sequim.

Vance Willis just missed out on double figures with nine points for the Wolves (2-2, 6-5), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

“I loved what I saw as far as us sharing the ball,” Glasser said.

“I heard that Alex had a high-30’s game, but the ball really moved despite him scoring so much.”

The Neah Bay boys looked hungry before the game. The team was dressed and ready to hit the floor well before conclusion of the girls game.

But Sequim was locked in from early on, racing to a 15-2 lead with 3:29 to go in the first quarter after 3s by Barry and Oliver.

Five quick points off the bench from Jericho McGimpsey and baskets by Abraham Venske helped pull the Red Devils back to 23-12 after one quarter.

Neah Bay opened the second period on a 10-2 run, propelled by treys from John Reamer and Jongi Claplanhoo to trail 25-22 with 5:29 before halftime.

Barry had the answer on the next possession, a step-back 3 from NBA range to help the Wolves close the half on a 21-9 run for a 46-31 halftime lead. Barry had 20 points in the first half for Sequim.

The Wolves run continued out of the locker room, with Sequim scoring the first six points for a 52-31 lead with 4:14 to play.

“We really had a tough night shooting the ball,” Red Devils coach Stan Claplanhoo said.

“Sequim is a really long team and I think that had an affect on some of our shots. They also handled our press well. That little point guard [Bates] was quick and made good decisions. And Barry really is a tough matchup for anybody with his size and shooting.”

Neah Bay trailed by as much as 21 late in the third quarter before cutting the margin to 60-44 entering the final period.

Sequim never let the Red Devils come closer than 10 points the rest of the way, with a Bates steal at midcourt and run out for a layup and free throws down the stretch sealing the victory.

Bates had four steals and was joined by Willis and Alex Rutherford for the team high in assists with four.

Bates also came up for praise from Glasser.

“You really notice when he’s out of the game,” Glasser said.

Bates at 5-foot-6, also had the unenviable task of guarding the 6-3 Venske. Venske hit for 28 points.

“He did a good job of guarding him, and Abe is so tough anyways,” Glasser said.

It was a different feel in the Neah Bay locker room.

“Sometimes you have nights where the shots just don’t fall like tonight,” Stan Claplanhoo said.

“The kids didn’t quit, they tried to get back in it and trim the lead and I think playing a team as good as Sequim is great test for us. We need these challenges, and having a loss, I hope that helps us breathe a little easier and takes a target off our back.”

Neah Bay (5-1) opens North Olympic League play at home against Crescent today.

Barry’s 37 points was good for a tie for fourth place all-time in the Sequim record books with Chad Jacobs, according to Dan Kari of KONP Radio.

Jacobs holds the school record for points in a contest with 41 in 1997-1998.

The Wolves host Port Angeles today at 7 p.m.

NEAH BAY — The Red Devils’ Kaela Tyler overcame muscle fatigue, the result of resuming post-practice weight lifting, conditioning and shooting drills, to hit for 27 points in Neah Bay’s victory.

“No, not at all,” Tyler said when asked if she had felt hot in pregame warmups.

“I was sore from workouts and I didn’t know if I was going to shoot so well.”

Tyler, a senior, and sophomore Tristin Johnson have been working out post-practice on their own initiative at the Neah Bay Community Center since before the season started, minus a winter vacation respite.

“We have a high ranking that we want to live up to,” Johnson said of the Red Devils No. 4 spot in the Associated Press poll.

The extra work paid off, with Tyler sinking five 3s in the contest to lead all scorers.

“She’s totally capable of having a lot of nights like this,” Red Devils coach Tony McCaulley said.

“Kaela has a real pure shot, not streaky at all.”

The game was tight in the early going, with Neah Bay holding an 11-7 lead after one quarter and taking a 24-20 lead into the locker room at half.

Faye Chartraw had nine of her 20 points for the Red Devils (5-0) in the third quarter, despite playing on a bum ankle.

“She twisted her ankle the other night playing against the men at open gym and was a game-time decision whether she’d play tonight,” McCaulley said.

A Tyler 3 over the outstretched arms of Sequim’s Adrienne Haggerty pushed the Neah Bay lead to 39-30 with one minute left in the third.

“We’ve been working on getting her that one-dribble shot [ability], and that was a good job there,” McCaulley said.

“She’s great at spot-up shooting but adding that will help us.”

Solid free throw shooting (10 of 14) in the second half helped the Red Devils pull away down the stretch.

“We held down our turnovers,” McCaulley said.

“One of the goals of the game was having less than 20 and we were right around there (23).

“Our defense was really good, though, to hold a team like that to 38 is a great job.”

Sequim held out senior Caitlin Stofferahn who scored 19 points Tuesday against North Mason in her first game back from tearing her anterior cruciate ligament late last season.

Stofferhahn has solid 3-point range and her presence on the floor helps the Wolves offensive spacing, which was pushed toward the middle for much of Wednesday’s game.

“We want to take things slow with her,” Wolves coach Evan Still said.

Kylee Williams led Sequim (5-6) with nine points and scored the most difficult basket of the night, taking an inbounds pass from McKenzie Bentz, driving baseline and putting in a reverse layup in the second quarter.

The Wolves host Port Angeles tonight at 5:15 p.m., while Neah Bay hosts Crescent.
