PREP BASKETBALL: Rider boys and girls win on the road; Sequim girls take unbeaten Tumwater to the wire

FIFE — The Port Angeles boys got off to a bit of a sluggish start on the road against Fife but their depth took over as they exploded for 49 points in 16 minutes in a 74-59 win over the Trojans.

Fife got ahead 18-13 after the first quarter but the Roughriders outscored the Trojans 49-21 over the second and third quarters to build up a 67-39 lead entering the fourth in Saturday’s game. The Riders eventually built the lead to 72-44 before letting off the gas late in the game.

In that 49-21 16-minute stretch, the Riders gave up just three field goals. For the game, Port Angeles outrebounded Fife 43 to 18, had 14 steals and scored 38 points in the paint.

Dru Clark led the Riders with 18 points, while Chase Cobb had 15 and Gary Johnson III 12. As usual, the Riders relied on their deep bench as 10 players scored.

“Chase Cobb was a difference maker. He was a match-up problem for them all night,” said coach Kasey Ulin.

This was the first time Clark had led the Riders in scoring. Ulin was proud of the fact that six different Riders have led the team in scoring so far this season.

“That’s just a testament to our team-first attitude,” Ulin said.

A pair of inside starters, Anton Kathol and Damen Ringgold, got into foul trouble early with three fouls each in the first half. Derek Bowechop, John Vaara and Luke Jarnigan, three bigs off the bench, came in and filled in with long minutes, combining for 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots.

“Bowechop was phenomenal. Vaara had four blocks last night,” Ulin said.

Port Angeles (3-0, 8-2) hosts Olympic (1-2, 2-8) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday as the first-place Riders return to Olympic League 2A Division play.

Crescent at Mount Vernon Christian tournament

MOUNT VERNON — Crescent dropped a pair of games at the Mount Vernon Christian Tournament this weekend, 68-42 Saturday to Rainier Christian and 62-26 to Mount Vernon Christian on Friday.

“We had a rough time in the first game. We couldn’t get our shots to drop and we had some fierce turnover problems. Hurricanes’ length gave us some problems and we just didn’t maintain our defensive effort,” said coach Chris Ferrier.

Ferrier said the Loggers improved greatly in the Rainier Christian game, but couldn’t keep up with the Mustangs’ Landon Bruce, who hit a staggering 12 3-pointers and scored 44 points.

“We played much better in the second game. We had a much higher energy level and a lot more focus. Offensively we were able to get a lot of good shots against the Mustangs, but we didn’t hit enough to keep up. We defended pretty darn well, we forced a lot of contested shots, but their kid Landon Bruce had the game of his life and dropped 44 points on us. He hit 12 3s, and I’d say about 35 of his points were with a hand in his face, the kid just had a great game. Shake his hand and move on,” Ferrier said,

”We had a couple guys get banged up in the Mount Vernon Christian game and had to go without them, so some younger guys got to play bigger roles and did some good things. Wyatt Hale was pretty solid for being thrust into a new role. Brendan [Bergstrom] was able to get loose again for some buckets and Eric [Emery] knocked down his open shots. Most of all, everyone played with enthusiasm and energy,” Ferrier said.

Girls Basketball Port Angeles 60, Bellevue 34

BELLEVUE — The Port Angeles basketball girls got off to a blistering start, jumping out to leads of 21-7 and 77-16 en route to a 60-34 romp over Bellevue.

The Roughriders were led by Jaida Wood, who had 17. Bailee Larson had 15 and Millie Long 10.

“Our full-court press caused numerous Bellevue turnovers in the first half, helping us to a 44-16 halftime lead. On the offensive end, we did a good job of attacking Bellevue’s aggressive man-man pressure on the perimeter, getting lots of inside scoring opportunities off drives,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

The Riders (3-0, 7-3) jump back into league play on the road Tuesday against Olympic (1-2, 5-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Tumwater 52, Sequim 45

TUMWATER — The Sequim girls went up against undefeated and No. 4-ranked Tumwater on the road and showed that they belong among the elite 2A teams, losing by just seven points to this powerhouse 52-45.

It was the first game all year that Tumwater (10-0) didn’t win by double digits. In fact, coming into this game, Tumwater’s average margin of victory was 18 points.

“The game was close most of the way and came down to us not blocking out in the end. We were down by three with less than a minute left, they ran the clock down, and ended up getting two key offensive boards. Eventually we had to foul.,” said coach Linsay Rapelje.

“We played hard but couldn’t pull out the win. I think we’ve learned a lot over winter break and hope we can apply it to league,” she said.

Jessica Dietzman led the Wolves with 12 points and six rebounds, while Jayla Julmist scored nine while pulling down 15 rebounds.

Hope Glasser added eight boards and seven points, while Kalli Wiker and LeeAnn Raney each scored nine points.

First-place Sequim (3-0, 7-3) returns to Olympic League 2A Division play by going on the road Tuesday to take on North Kitsap (2-1, 5-5 at 5:15 p.m.
