FORKS — The Forks boys withstood a furious come-from-behind rally from Montesano and got 28 points from Marky Adams to seize second place in the Evergreen 1A League with a 67-62 win.
Adams scored 13 of his points during the wild fourth quarter, including a crucial three-point play to help seal Tuesday’s game.
The Spartans built up a 16-point lead in the second half, but the Bulldogs came storming back, hitting clutch 3-pointers and scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter to make it close.
“They [the Bulldogs] brought it, man,” said coach Rick Gooding.
Cole Baysinger and Parker Browning each scored nine for the Spartans, while Jeffrey Schumack scored eight. With his 28-point effort, Adams is now averaging exactly 30 points a game over his past three games.
Forks still has a chance to gain a share of the Evergreen 1A crown. The Spartans and Bulldogs are now each 5-2 in league, while Hoquiam is 6-1. The Spartans have a game at Tenino on Friday that they should win, while Hoquiam and Montesano play each other on the same day. If Hoquiam and Forks both win, all three teams will end up at 6-2 in league play, tied for first.
Forks is 13-6 overall.
Port Angeles 62, Olympic 60
BREMERTON — A shorthanded Roughriders squad got a monster game from Noah McGoff, who hit eight 3-pointers and scored 33 in a crucial Olympic League 2A Division 62-60 win against Olympic.
“We’re playing our best basketball at the best time of year,” said coach Kasey Ulin. It was the third straight win for the Roughriders, who at 7-4 (11-7 overall) have a shot at second place in the Olympic League 2A.
The Riders played without 6-foot-6 post Liam Clark, who was out ill. Luke Angevine also played sick.
“Luke battled through it,” Ulin said.
McGoff ended up shooting 8-for-10 from beyond the arc. Ulin called McGoff’s game, “the best shooting performance I’ve ever seen.”
He also said the Riders stayed composed when Olympic put on a full-court press and scored eight straight points late in the fourth quarter to make the game close.
“They gave us everything they had.
“I was happy with how our guys stayed composed and poised,” Ulin said.
Ulin also said he is pleased with how the team has responded to some tough losses in midseason, including a 21-point home loss to that same Olympic team earlier this year. He said the way his team is playing now is a testament to the Riders’ senior leadership.
Port Angeles has one last regular-season game left at 7 p.m. today at 7-4 Kingston. If Port Angeles wins, they will end up at 8-4 in the Olympic League 2A. Meanwhile, Olympic still has one game left against first-place North Kitsap, which is undefeated in league. If Port Angeles wins and Olympic loses, the Riders will end up in a tie for second place.
The Riders are already assured of a district tournament appearance.
Sequim 57, North Mason 40
BELFAIR — The Wolves won their second straight, getting double digit scoring from three players and beating North Mason on the road 57-40.
Payton Glasser led the Wolves Tuesday night with 17, while Nate Despain came through with 16 and Kyler Rollness 10.
The Wolves (1-11, 4-15) will try to wrap up their season on a three-game winning streak. They play their final home game of the year at 5:15 p.m. tonight against Coupeville, who they beat earlier this week.
Girls Basketball Sequim 33, North Mason 28
SEQUIM — The Wolves got 14 points from Adrienne Haggerty and held North Mason to just 11 second-half points as Sequim kept its postseason hopes alive with a 33-28 win.
Ella Christiansen also scored nine points for the Wolves.
Sequim (5-7, 7-12), has a final home game at 3:30 p.m. today against Coupeville. As far as postseason, the Wolves must simply sit back and wait to see what happens when Port Angeles hosts Kingston, 5-6 in the Olympic League 2A Division, at 7 p.m. today. Sequim needs Port Angeles to win that game, and it would also help their cause if Bremerton loses to North Mason today.
Port Townsend 54, Kingston 44, OT
PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks scored 15 points in overtime and got 20 points from Jaz Apker-Montoya to help fend off the Buccaneers.
Kaitlyn Meek scored 13 for Port Townsend, while Jenna Carson added 10.
Coach Scott Wilson said that in addition to the Redhawks’ huge overtime, the girls also played well in the third quarter, in which they outscored Kingston 16-9. He said Apker-Montoya did much of her damage in that third quarter.
The Redhawks (4-3, 9-7), assured of second place in the Olympic League 1A Division, will play Klahowya at 7 p.m. tonight to see if they can lock up a winning record. That will be Port Townsend’s final regular-season home game, but they should get a home playoff game.
The Redhawks finish their regular season at Coupeville at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Chimacum 40, Klahowya 27
CHIMACUM — The Cowboys got out to a 15-2 lead in the first quarter en route to a 40-27 win over Klahowya.
“We jumped on them early with excellent ball pressure … and picking apart the zone with crisp passes and good ball rotation,” said coach Trevor Huntingford.
Mechelle Nisbet led the Cowboys with 11, while Maddie Dowling and Grace Yaley scored eight each.
”I think we still need to learn to keep our intensity up the whole game,” Huntingford said.
The Cowboys (3-5, 10-9) will look to end their regular season with a winning record with their final Olympic League 1A game at Klahowya at 7 p.m. Saturday. Chimacum will then get ready for postseason play.
”We are excited to see our second post season birth in the last 3 years,” said Huntinford.
Quilcene 47, Crosspoint 25
QUILCENE — Senior Allison Jones had a whale of a game in her final regular-season contest for Quilcene, scoring 31 points in a 47-25 win over Crosspoint.
“She put on a show and scored 31 points for her team. She is the player of the game tonight. Talk about hustle on both ends of the floor and great leadership tonight,” said coach Briana Weller.
Weller also said that Sydney Brown played a good game defensive and that Abby Weller had a tough defensive assignment, shutting down Crosspoint’ 6-0 post, Joelle Zookooski, keeping her to only eight points on the night. Weller also had 10 reobunds and five assists.
The Rangers finish the regular season at 6-6 in the Sea-Tac 1B League (11-8 overall), finishing sixth among the 1B schools. They will begin postseason play in the Sea-Tac1B League Tournament on Monday against Puget Sound Adventist (3-8 in the Sea-Tac 1B League.).
