PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Forks’ rally undone at final buzzer; other area reports

ROCHESTER — Jacob Valley made a scoop shot from inside the free-throw line that went through the hoop at the buzzer to give Rochester a 56-54 Evergreen League boys basketball victory over Forks.

The Spartans rallied in the fourth quarter after trailing 47-36 entering the period.

“The second and third quarters, we were just super lethargic,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said following Friday’s game.

“We came out in the fourth quarter and beat them by nine. Unfortunately, it was too little too late.

“We’ve got to play with the energy we had in the fourth quarter the entire game, you know, not wait until we’re down by seven, eight to turn it on.”

Parker Browning paced the Spartans with 17 points. Cole Baysinger added 12 and Marky Adams had 10, including a free throw with less than 10 seconds left that tied the game at 54-54.

Rochester’s Noah Escott led all scorers with 19 points, with 13 of those coming in the first half.

“He lit us up in the first half,” Gooding said.

Valley finished with six points for the Warriors (2-6, 2-12).

Forks (3-6, 5-8) hosts Elma (2-5, 4-9) on Tuesday. The Spartans beat the Eagles 61-50 in the teams’ first meeting last month.

“We had one good quarter, the second,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said of Thursday’s game.

“Port Angeles has some young kids that can knock down shots.

“We struggled to score in the second half and it got away from us.”

Wyatt McNeece led the Loggers with 13 points and Luke Leonard added 10.

BREMERTON — Nice, even game for three quarters.

Unfortunately for the Roughriders, it got out of hand early when they fell behind 21-2 by the end of the first quarter of Friday’s matchup between the top two teams in Olympic League 2A.

“The first quarter obviously was the story of the game,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.

“I made an early defensive choice that didn’t go well, and Olympic jumped out to a 7-0 lead. We switched to our zone defense, which has generally been successful against most teams in general, and Olympic in particular, but we allowed too much dribble penetration in it.

“We played man-to-man the rest of the game, but the damage was done.”

The Trojans shot 9 of 11 from the field in the opening period, and Port Angeles made only 1 of 12 from the field.

“We missed several shots inside, and by the time the quarter ended, the offensive futility combined with the defensive breakdowns to make for a margin that we couldn’t overcome,” Poindexter said.

“While Olympic played extremely well, the game could have been different if we had attacked the basket with more confidence and finished inside better.”

Olympic’s Kiki Mitchell led all scorers with 15 points. Katie Campana scored 13 and Danielle Monzon contributed six.

Katyn Flores was the Riders’ top scorer with eight points, while leading scorer Nizhoni Wheeler was limited to seven points.

Tenth-ranked Port Angeles (12-2) and Olympic (10-4) are now tied atop the league standings with 6-1 marks.

The Riders host North Mason (0-6, 5-9) on Tuesday night. Port Angeles, which hasn’t scored more than 38 points in a game since Dec. 18, had its highest scoring game of the season in a 53-21 win over the Bulldogs last month.

Conversely, Olympic became only the third team this season to surpass 30 points against the Riders.

BREMERTON — The Wolves overcame a scoreless first quarter, but the Knights slowly pulled away in the second half of this Olympic League 2A contest.

Spurred by McKenzie Bentz and Allysen Montelius, Sequim put up 20 points in the second quarter to cut Bremerton’s 16-0 lead at the end of the first quarter to 22-20 by halftime.

Bentz scored nine points in the quarter, and Montelius buried two 3-pointers for the Wolves in the second.

Bremerton (3-4, 6-7) took back part of its lead by outscoring the Wolves 15-9 in the third quarter, and then held on in the fourth.

Bentz led Sequim with nine points. Montelius and Ella Christiansen each added eight points.

Lizz Lemoureux put up a game-high 18 points for the Knights, and Alyssa Beach finished with 12.

The Wolves (1-6, 5-8) host Kingston (4-3, 8-6) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Buccaneers defeated Sequim 53-40 on Dec. 16.

BELFAIR — Kaitlyn Meek and Kassie Olin led the Redhawks to a 9-2 lead after one quarter, and Port Townsend held off the Bulldogs from there for its fourth victory of the season.

Both teams were limited to seven players apiece for Friday’s game. Port Townsend’s roster was depleted by illness.

Meek scored a game-high 19 points, and Olin finished with 12. Both put up eight points in the first half, after which the Redhawks led 23-16.

“Senior captain Kassie Olin set the pace with a series of mid-range jumpers,” Port Townsend coach Scott B. Wilson said. “She hit for eight in the first half before defensive adjustments by North Mason cooled her off.”

The Redhawks still led by seven points at the end of three quarters, but added three points to their advantage in the free throw-filled fourth.

“[Our] defense was very tight, and special credit goes to Jenna Carson who always plugged up the middle, and to a strong rebounding effort by Reilly Berkshire, Jenna and Kaitlyn at both ends of the court,” Wilson said.

Sydney Garrett paced North Mason with 15 points, highlighted by four 3-pointers, three of those coming in the second half.

Port Townsend (1-2, 4-9) concludes its nonleague schedule at home against Bremerton (6-7) on Tuesday. After that, the Redhawks finish out their season with Olympic League 1A play with two more games apiece against Coupeville (2-0, 8-3), Klahowya (2-1, 3-10) and Chimacum (0-2, 2-10).

SILVERDALE — After a fairly even first half, the Eagles pulled past the Redhawks with a strong third quarter.

“Klahowya’s shooting guard, Maya Ladner, got loose from [our] defense on the perimeter in the third period. She nailed a pair of treys, another field goal and two free throws for a 10-point quarter, leading Klahowya to a 14-8 margin for that quarter which proved the difference in the game,” Port Townsend coach Scott B. Wilson said.

Ladner would finish with a game-high 15.

“[We] rallied in the fourth quarter behind the shooting of freshman Karlee Kellogg, who hit three field goals for six points, and led that quarter 13-12,” Wilson said.

“Our surges were answered by Klahowya and time ran out before the rally was complete.”

Wilson said his team shot better from the field in this game than in previous contests and nearly every member of the team scored.

Kaitlyn Meek led Port Townsend with 14 points.

“Our free-throw shooting fell short, however, with the team hitting only 10 of 22,” Wilson said.

“The exception was junior Jenna Carson, who hit 6 of 8 and finished with nine [points].

Wilson said his team showed improvement in many areas.

“The defense was stout, except for a brief lapse in the third period. Rebounding at both ends of the court were better, and for long minutes the lid came off the basket for our shooters — all good signs as we head into the meat of the season,” Wilson said.

“The Eagles are a quality team and we think we are evenly matched with them, and look forward to the next two meetings.”

JOYCE — The Loggers shook off a slow start to drop the Roughriders and earn their first win on the season.

Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said his team displayed “some inspired defense, committed rebounding, and loads of positive energy and hustle” in the victory.

“We were down at the end of the first quarter, and it would have been pretty easy to just let things get away,” Ferrier said.

“Fortunately we hit some shots and pulled in front.

“Cari Belford had a huge old school three-point play to put the game out of reach for us in the fourth quarter.

“She had a tremendous game with nine points and six rebounds.”

Guard Alyssa Hutto added 11 rebounds and six points for the Loggers.

Leonie Hofmann also had 12 rebounds for Crescent.

“[There were] many positive contributions from every member of the team tonight,” Ferrier said.
