PORT TOWNSEND — Port Angeles broke open a close game with Port Townsend by going inside and getting some baskets in the paint during a 19-6 third quarter spurt on the way to a 62-43 nonleague boys basketball game.
“Two-point game at halftime and their bigs came out in the third quarter and got some easy looks inside,” Redhawks coach Tom Webster said.
“We have been a good third-quarter team all year, but their big guys were hard to handle.”
Youth movement
Garrett Edwards, a 6-3 sophomore, led the Roughriders with 15 points, while 6-6 sophomore post Liam Clark added 11 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and four steals.
“Our posts and frontcourt are coming along really well,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said.
“Garrett and Liam are gaining a lot of confidence. We are making an emphasis of throwing the ball inside and working our way out offensively. And those two work together well and are active defensively.
Ulin also praised freshman forward Anton Kathol who scored 12 points.
“Between two sophomores and a freshman, they combined for almost 40 points,” Ulin said.
Webster was impressed on the opposite sideline.
“The Edwards kid played really well for them,” Webster said.
“We handled their perimeter guys pretty well, [Berkley] Hill went head to head with [Grayson] Peet.”
Hill continued his strong run of play with 19 points to lead all scorers. Peet had nine for Port Angeles.
“And Luke Angevine is a real good player and Detrius [Kelsall] held him to three points,” Webster said.
“They were guarding us pretty good, so we have to get more production out of other guys besides Berkley.”
Port Townsend (2-0, 3-1) hosts South Whidbey on Monday.
Port Angeles (2-1, 4-2) travels all the way to Pullman for a nonleague game on Monday.
Ulin said his team will have a walkthrough at Central Washington University in Ellensburg on Monday morning before traveling to face a good Greyhounds squad.

QUILCENE — The Rangers lost 42-34 in their Sea-Tac League opener against the Eagles.
Katie Love led Quilcene in Friday’s game with 11 points. The Rangers also lost another close one Wednesday, 47-44 to Clallam Bay.
“We made some drastic improvements coming off our loss to but still struggled to take care of the ball at times and work our offensive sets. Until we can become patient and proficient at working our offensive sets, it is going to be tough,” said coach Brianna Weller.
“These girls, for the most part, are young and it is going to take lots more playing together as a team unit to gain confidence and unity. We will get there but it is not going to happen overnight. The girls gave a good effort tonight for the most part and should be proud of their progress,” Weller said.
Against Clallam Bay, Weller said the Rangers started slow and didn’t take care of the ball.
Our high volume of turnovers and lack of an organized offense became our worst enemy,” she said.
Jones led the Rangers with 19, while Coffey scored 13.
Clallam Bay statistics were not available by press time. The Bruins (4-0) were on the road Saturday playing Lake Quinault.
The Rangers (0-1, 1-3) played Saturday at Mary Knight and will play Clallam Bay again at 2 p.m. Monday.

“I was happy to see well-rounded scoring again tonight, and for periods of time I thought we executed very well offensively and defensively,” said coach Trevor Huntingford.
“We still have lapses and I feel like we eased up when the lead grew to 19 and I don’t like that,” he said.
Huntingford said Shanya Nisbet had an outstanding game and keyed the offense in the first half serving up assists, getting to the free throw line and scoring. She ended the game with eight points. He said in addition to her 17 points, Mechelle Nisbet was a defensive stopper and that post Alice Yaley had her best all-around game of the season.
