PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim’s team effort boosts Wolves

Port Angeles boys handle business defensively

SEQUIM — Sequim overwhelmed North Mason from the opening tip on their way to a 53-27 Olympic League girls basketball triumph.

The Wolves broke out to a 29-2 advantage on the beleagured Bulldogs after the first quarter — and then called off the dogs for the remainder of the contest.

“Everyone got to play tonight,” coach Joclin Julmist said. “The girls played really good defense in the first quarter and shot the ball very well, giving [us] a big lead.”

Jolene Vaara again led the Wolves in scoring with 17 points in limited minutes, to go along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Hannah Bates knocked down three 3-point shots to hit for nine points.

Libby Turella scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds, while teammate Dani Herman hauled down seven boards with six points.

Sequim (3-0, 5-0) hosts Anacortes today at noon.

BAINBRIDGE — Becca Ramirez broke loose for nine points in the fourth as the Spartans edged the Riders.

“Two contrasting defensive styles resulted in a low-scoring, but intensely fought game,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “Bainbridge’s aggressive and physical man-to-man defense didn’t give us many opportunities inside to score and forced long possession times as we looked for open shots.

“Our zone defense took away outside scoring for Bainbridge (they were 1 of 16 from 3-point range), but they were successful at scoring down low more in the 4th quarter (5 of 7 on two-point shots in the fourth quarter).”

Lindsay Smith led Port Angeles with 16 points, swiped five steals and added three assists.

Paige Mason and Lexie Smith totaled three steals apiece and Smith had six boards.

“Our play was affected by an early injury to Izzy Felton, which caused substitution rotations that put some of our players in unfamiliar roles on offense, but I was impressed by how resilient we were throughout the game.

“Our defensive effort and execution was the best it’s been all year, and our team played with heart and a totally unified approach.

“While the girls felt bad about some misses inside and at the free-throw line, I couldn’t have asked for a better effort overall.”

TACOMA — The Rivals were up at halftime before fatigue set in in the second half.

“I was incredibly pleased with the way the girls played,” coach Lorraine Rimson said. “LC might be one of the top three teams, definitely top four in the league.

“I said I’ve been waiting for this game for four years. We broke their press, we passed well, we rebounded well, we took good shots. We don’t have a deep bench and we don’t have the stamina to hang and they came back on us.”

Alyssa Vandenberg led the way with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Kay Botkin added six points and dished out seven assists.

Juliette O’Hara also added two big buckets in the fourth quarter.

“She came in and was focused and aggressive for us,” Rimson said.

“We had a lot of unforced errors, so there’s room for a lot of improvement, but the kids overall did really, really well.”

East Jefferson (1-2, 1-3) hosts North Mason tonight at 5 p.m.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders rode their defense to victory over the Spartans at home Thursday.

“Defensively, we were great all night long,” coach Kasey Ulin said. “We were disciplined, active, pressured the ball and took their shooters out of the game.

“We got out to an 11-0 start early, our guys were connected and got great shots.”

Port Angeles’ posts got into foul trouble in the second quarter and the Riders struggled to find a flow offensively going into the break.

“Second half we executed better on that end,” Ulin said.

“Overall, it was a good win. Bainbridge is a really solid team, so to beat them by 20-plus on a night when I didn’t think we played really well, it’s a good sign for us.”

Port Angeles (4-0, 6-0) has a mini-district tournament set up for the week before Christmas.

The Riders will host Renton (3-0) on Tuesday and Foss (5-1) Thursday. Both games tip at 3 p.m.
